I have noticed over time that those who consume village liquour / makali etc., do become kind of zombified i.e. they loose sense of self and sense of control and increasingly become a former version of themselves
When you meet and talk to them whether sober or drunk its just clear something is not right.
There seems to be some chemical in the village liquour that alters the brain or does some irreversible damage to these people
My experience
Napoleon brandy ile ya chupa. Nilikunywa neat on an empty stomach. Nilijikuta kwa kitchen ya kibanda asubuhi, nimenyeshewa na sina shati wala viatu. Had to walk from Westi hadi Mfangano St. at 7 am on a Sunday morning to beg for a ride home. Donda aliniokolea hio siku.
Addiction can be tough to break, others It becomes an escape from reality, you get to a point where you don’t want to take responsibilities of the mess anymore.
I have a very close friend of mine tulikua na yy campo ametoka rehab jana. Alipelekwa rehab Kondele na ni mtu wa Kitale. Bright guy alikua anadunga computer science. I mean tulikua walevi but ever since arudi pale home aanze kukunywa changaa ya village ni kama amefyat maze. Even when talking to him its like there is something really off. Ako na brother in law who is veeery rich so yy anatuma makarao wanatupa jamaa ndani ya boot ya probox hadi rehab. It has happened twice. Changaa wachana nayo kabisa.
Control of the central loci is supreme in this matters. Control the inner self and the world is your oyster. For years, watu wameshindwa kuelewa why despite being highly educated, unemployed and imbibing in busaa on a weekly basis I have never fallen off the wagon. Unakaa na wasee kwa busaa den only to disappear into thin air to resurface three days later. Unaenda matanga iko na wasee wa Nairobi only for them to call you two days later wondering ulipotea saa ngapi. Hawakukuona kwa tent ya chakula.
I have a different theory…kwanza changaa inategemea ni ya wapi. I have observed a trend in the village whereby those old men and women who used to drink chang’aa when we were kids are still at it and don’t seem to be having any issues…but we now have young ones who are drinking chang’aa in the morning and makali in the evening…those ones are having it rough. I also realised that our kakamega village still has the same brewers from 1980s! Meaning they know their trade…shida ni ukutane na chang’aa ya gachie, mathare and kangemi.
Pia mimi niko na friend kama huyo…yake ilianzia pale jkuat…dude is in and out of rehabs…the other time after rehab amekam akanyenyekea tukapea yeye some kidogo job to keep him busy but siku ya kupatana na clients tukapigiwa simu ati he turned up late by an hr smelling alcohol…na hakua ameoga. We sat him down jamaa akalilia tukapea yeye another chance…blunder! He’s now back in kitale. This is a civil engineer who scored a straight A in 2002 before As were common. Good thing is his dad and young bro are also in his field so hao hupea yeye vibarua to keep him busy
You are just regurgitating theories brought forth as part of disinformation by commercial brewers kama Kenya Breweries. Chang’aa ya nyanza ama western haina hizo effects unasema. Poison ya watu wa central ndio hatari juu ya vitu wanaweka ndani.
