Many Muslims families are found in Western Kenya today, because of the early influence of ex-railway employees of Tanganyikan origin and early Muslim traders that established themselves in Mumias and it’s environs before the advent of colonialism in Kenya, the likes of Shariff Omar, Shariff Mahaddi, Shariff Mahine( I married from their family).

Jumuia til Baladia was formed by Maalim Hamisi Ngige, Abdullah Tairara and Omar Said to propagate Islam in Central and Rift Valley provinces in the early 1900’s.

My class 6 daughter over the holidays had a social science assignment which was about the colonial rule in kenya…there were questions about the abawanga, nabongo mumia, mekatilili, the nandi, mau mau…the collaborators, LEGCO, IBEACO…etc! She dint have most of the stuff in her notes so i had to google the stuff and at some point i considered posting the questions here cz i dint know most of the answers! she popped the assignment a day before opening day…i had a long sunday afternoon, but i also learnt alot from that session!
