Back in the cold War Russia Made a “dead hand” system which would target and launch nukes at the united states if they, by any chance where wiped out. The “dead end/hand” system has since been updated to include European targets and is still an active policy of the Russian defensive military strategy.
So in the event of a preemptive nuclear attack by the US and or its allies on the Russians; that somehow manages to wipe out its entire military command or people … Russian entire nuclear arsenal will still launch automatically at American and European targets minutes after the first nuke warheads hits. The system effectively assures mutual destruction … even if they are all dead. Hence the term; Dead hand (American terminology) or Dead end ((Russian terminology) of the system.

They were initially during the cold War; extremely suspicious of the Americans unpredictable wilingness to use nukes and their advanced capabilities that had the capacity to deliver… nuclear warheads beyond the capacity of their air defence and early warning systems; to be able intercepted or counter strike before they were totally devastated. So they developed the ingenious “Dead hand” system … that to date acts as a deterrent … through the threat of mutual destruction.
Never heard of the dead hand, but i thought after Russia managed to develop nukes is when the US realized they didn’t have an upper hand any more

The Americans also had the big stick, a doomsday plane that was designed to fly unmanned dropping nuclear weapons for weeks incase the homeland was overwhelmed
Months of radiation uotpour until it fails… That would circle the whole of Russia, but the other problem is, if st Petersburg was gonna be a target, nato ally at the border would suffer some fallout drifts, just like Germany suffered from Chernobyl’s meltdown
