Iron Dome has absolutely nothing to do with medium range and long range defense. The maximum range of the Iron Dome is 70km
In Israel, this is done by the David’s Sling System (medium range) and Arrow 2 and 3(Long range) as well as the Patriot missile system
All of which did VERY well during the Iranian attack. No one died from that attack except for a Palestinian in the West Bank who was killed by a piece of a destroyed rocket falling to the ground.
The US is adding the THAAD system mainly to collect data.
Fun fact: The more a system is engaged, the more it learns and becomes more effective . THAAD has not had much practice except for when it was activated in the UAE when the Houthis tried to bomb Dubai and Abu Dhabi. An Iranian counterattack will help fine-tune the system over time. It is quite literally how even the Israeli systems work. Today, Arrow 3 is able to intercept missiles even in space (as it did with one of the Iranian given ballistic missiles the Houthis launched at Tel Aviv). The Iron Dome and David’s Sling have learnt A LOT from the 26,000 missiles launched at Israel, of which only 2,000 landed and only around 30 actually caused major damage and death to civillians(the others landed in open fields or started forest fires ). That is why Hezbollah is shifting towards Drones.
Only Israel is also about to launch the Iron Beam which is 90% cheaper to operate than the Iron Dome and whose equipment can be operated even on the back of a pickup, rendering all projectiles; drones or missiles , useless.
