Because majority of the population lives in the urban areas mostly in the coasts. Using only the popular vote would alienate rural areas to a point where politicians would ignore these rural and rust belt states.
thanks @vnv . where do the votes count coz lets say they vote for a candidate overwhelmingly but the candidate loose coz of electoral votes. si hapo votes zao ni useless ama zitatumiwa wapi?
Most candidates form a coalition. In Trump’s case he went for workers. You can’t just count on areas with large population. Tyranny of numbers haiongei. It’s about appeal across the country. In 2000 Bush won with less votes in the popular vote.
