To be fair to the french, they’ve always been more independent of US influence compared to other European countries. They just don’t follow the US blindly unless their interests are also looked after. In the 1960s France withdrew from the US-dominated NATO command structure. France also independently developed their nuclear program, unlike Britain which depended heavily on the US. They also have a robust defence industry. When other European partners were pussyfooting on the development of a european fighter jet (the future Eurofighter Typhoon), France unilaterally developed the Dassault Rafale.
