Its a federation of states that were once separate and with different interests. the college system was meant to constraint states with bigger population. if they didn’t have it, you would need to campaign in about 5 states and carry the day with majority votes. Again without it, smaller states would tend to align with larger states for political clout leading to a shiny-eye dim-eye effect that you see here in our country
