Upgrading a Dell Optiplex 9020 GPU (Graphics card)

Many months back I acquired a Dell optiplex 9020 high tower for gaming purposes. It came with an AMD graphics card 2MB. While this card is fair for normal games, it was stuttering to high heavens with simulators.

I got hold of an ASUS 750GTX graphics card and quickly opened up the dell, slotted in the massive OC’d card and then lo and behold, we needed a 12v power source for the card, none came with the Dell PSU!

I purchased an aftermarket ATX PSU and replaced the Dells PSU. lo and behold, the main board connector on the ATX turned out to be 24pin, while that on the Dell curcuit board was 6pin.

I wont bog you down with the rest, I aquired a cable adapter that worked perfectly. If anyone needs this modification I have a spare adaptor I am willing to sell…

ulikohoa how much kwa hii ASUS 750GTX?

Thats why its advisable to build your own custom gaming pc from scratch to avoid such complication. kwanza you should never buy a dell pc for gaming because those are the worst when it comes to compatibility and upgradability.

Mariachi, the ASUS was not very expensive, I think it was about 22,000/=

@vercetti19, agreed, I learnt that lesson too late. I am thinking of building a bigger overclocked one, just need to get someone who know comps well. It will need to be 4770 speed minimum, may be overclocked and Nvidia card (we could recover the ASUS I already have)

well, I am an experienced system builder, having built my own gaming PC and also for several of my friends. I also had a dell optiplex 755 that I had maxed out in terms of possible upgrades until I hit a wall. The damn thing just couldn’t cut it any more given the nature of today’s demanding games. Currently I am a very happy gamer with my current machine.

Indulge me a little. What is your speed? Which graphics card and whaty specs? RAM?

Then the big question, approximately how much would the rig cost? Advise.

I would be using this for MS Flight simulator.

That looks beautiful. Stay put, I will budget. The only thing I would ask to be changed is the AMD graphics card, those dont work well with MS flight simulator.

We will change that to NVIDIA. I will contact you soon.

am not that into gaming but guyz can i get a good core i5 motherboard or i7 kwa good price ?

Cool … @mariachi come and have a look… @Rhapsody have your say…

@vercetti19 can the spec 03 fit a 140mm as a back exhaust fan?

No. The back exhaust fan can only be 120mm. However, in the front intake you can have two 140mm or two 120mm fans. Its a nice mid tower case as you can fit gpus of any length or tall cpu coolers of up to 168mm.

I can arrange for that if you want

Its a client who wanted a build with positive pressure on that case. Thanks let me continue doing ma research…
