Landlocked Uganda on Saturday announced plans to export its future crude oil production via a new pipeline to be built through Tanzania rather than Kenya.
“We have agreed that the oil pipeline route be developed from Uganda in Hoima to the Tanzanian port of Tanga,” Uganda foreign affairs minister Sam Kutesa said.
Security issues in northern Kenya also cited as a reason to use the Tanzania route.
Of course was never going to go through Kenya, there was major concerns from the ugandans because of instabilities associated with some parts of Kenya during elections
Kenya hits back.

Kenya plans to construct own crude oil pipeline from Lokichar, Turkana to Lamu after Uganda opted to use Tanzania route.

We ought not to panic. There is so much development to be done in East Africa that each one of us will have more than his piece of the cake. And if we’re gonna gloat over a mere pipeline… We haven’t seen nothing yet. Tanzania have plans for constructing their own version of the standard gauge railway. There are also plans to build a highway through Serengeti National Park to the Northwestern parts of their country, right to their borders with Uganda and Rwanda. What will we do when the inevitable happens, and all Great Lakes countries decide to use the Tanzania facilities instead of ours? We should do what we can, when we need it, within our means, and do it solely for ourselves and our future generations.
if tz can build a road across the serengeti then were done. they just need to include rail and pipeline and modernise their port (remember their port is the best natural port in east africa) and from there they will be the gateway to eastern africa.
so KENYA BETTER BEWARE
you should know that kenya is a financial hub in East Africa, which in itself is a major incentive for investors. TZ still has a looooong way to go before it can stand shoulder to shoulder with kenya on so many fronts. and while they are developing their infrastructure i don’t expect kenya to rest on its own laurels.
i agree that kenya is east africas economic power house. bt it will be cheaper to move people and goods directly from dar to western tz and rwanda burundi and ug if they have a direct route through tz through the forest and good roads.
Anyway, all nations should act in their self-interest. Business opportunities in the region will continue to increase whether TZ, UG or Rwanda build their infrastructure.
If you think Kenya is all that and a bag of dhania, you should try and do a check on Kenya, TZ and Ethiopia’s GDP from twenty years ago. It will give you an idea on whose economy is doing better…
Hint: TZ has grown steadily and is now on the verge of becoming our peer. If we keep up with our fuckery, we’ll be ogling their behind as they drift away. Ethiopia was a smaller economy 20yrs ago. They’re are now a bigger one by far. Though this doesn’t translate to much on GDP per capita due to the high population.
WaKenya tuache kuwa watu wa “My father has a bigger phone than your father”. Some of these “quiet” people, read economies, are actually fairing better by the day when compared to us. We are slowly becoming barking dogs with little bite left on them. But do we really have any idea how this is happening?
Again, our countries have a long, loooong way to go in matters development! We are all newborns when we talk about roads, railways, etc. There will be the one that seems to move faster than the others only for the rest to catch up and overtake. An oscillating game that will be repeated over and over for decades to come! There will be a time when an East African country will be announcing tenders for the construction of a Maglev railroad, imagine that!!! It will be naive of us If we can imagine that a particular country will have all that development while all the other neighbors are in a deep comatose!
Kenya, compared to others, even Ethiopia, the new kid on the block, is ahead of the others in infrastructure and many other things. But our biggest undoing is our complacency, in that we have allowed boardroom corruption to ruin our ambitions and progress. We should not relax. Tanzania, on the other hand, although they also have boardroom corruption, it is not as pronounced as it is in Kenya. And they have the best wellbeing feeling any citizens can have. But in Kenya, the citizenry is very dissatisfied with their own country! Sometimes
I share your sentiments, good sir. And I agree with you on all your points, bur currently, we need more action than talk. Corruption is our biggest undoing. Yes, it is! It makes our gains look too minor for any benefit. Gains should really outweigh drawbacks for any development to happen. We are so much on that ten steps ahead and twenty behind thing… And no, Kenya may not exactly be better than Ethiopia in terms of infrastructural development. Visited Addis a long time ago so I cannot state with confidence the current state of infrastructural development there. Some ninja who’s been there more recently needs to bring us up to speed on what the city looks like. I left some Chinese company doing very nice things with the roads in the capital and on your way to some province…
What Ethiopia is doing with the R. Nile will give it much more than it is currently earning from the river. What did we do with our chance to change or even disregard the treaty with Egypt as concerns L. Victoria? Someone was paid to go easy on it… and poof, just like that, Kenya gets the short end of the stick. Ethiopia trashed the agreement in totality and is buildign a very big dam along the same river. We have a very long way to go if corruption cannot be stemmed. I see people disparaging TZ here when we import food from them! Yes, when our maize supplies go down, we turn to TZ, a country which we think has nothing on us. If a whole country that thinks of itself as the region’s economic powerhouse cannot feed its own population, then what really are we gloating about? It is not like we do not have the fertile lands. I think we do have enough lands to farm and even sell some suprlus to other economies.
That serengeti highway was cancelled after huge protests from activists because it was going to divide serengeti reserve into two. Their sgr is still in the concept stage while our is being built.
Trust me on this, Mate! Hawa limbukeni wa Tanzania will find a way at whatever cost! If only to compete with Kenya! They will build their railway even if it will be used by a single train for weeks! Remember they just beat us to the pipeline project and now they know how sweet victory can be!
We recently drenched Kilindini port to accommodate the biggest ships in the world so that they can use the second container terminal that was completed last month. So the small advantage of their natural port is way over. Second phase of Kilindini port expansion has started while the third phase is been negotiated after the masterplan was approved. JICA continues to fund the whole project while KPA repays that loan +interest from the proceeds of its operations. Last year KPA made 5 Billion profit despite the loans and corruption. Meanwhile the dar port expansion was stopped by pombe before it even starts and the whole management fired. Its has stalled now while we move on expanding, modernizing and improving. Once the Likoni bridge is done and Dongo Kungu bypass are done in the next few years then they will never catch up.
