Two people were shot dead on Monday after protests turned violent at Ramula Police Post in Gem, Siaya County, according to police.
Authorities said the demonstrators were opposing a licensed gold mining company planning to operate in the area. The group reportedly blocked a nearby road before moving to Ramula market and later forcing their way into the police post, where property was damaged and a tractor set on fire.
Police said officers fired warning shots but later opened fire after being overwhelmed, killing two youths as the crowd dispersed.
Siaya County Commissioner Nobert Komora confirmed the incident, adding that the bodies were taken to Yala Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo condemned the violence and urged residents to resolve disputes through dialogue, warning against further unrest.
The idiot of an MP, how can he condemn his own people instead of condemning the killers who even killed raira? The blood based chieth is full of blood hungry fools.
