A bag of maiza in UG is Ksh 2050 while locally the farmers are selling to the government at Ksh 3000 - Ksh 3200.
Apparently hata mayai ya kutoka UG hapa soko ya Wangige ni cheap that the ones sourced within the area .

failure to protect farmers. Read a little about how US protects its farmers and prevents everybody from leaving the industry and doing something else. The us doesnt care whether brazilian sugar is 10 bob per kilo. guarantees farmers 80 percent market even if it means buying the sugar when others cannot, then selling it. and a huge tax barrier for imported sugar. there are other measures for other products. this prevents having everybody doing speculation like we are doing today or in 1920-30s US. people with savings are doing government bonds, trading this or the other, buying plots etc. nobody wants to do something tedious. there is no incentive.

Farming inputs like fertilizer, equipment etc are generally inflated pricewise in Kenya leaving the farmers with the burden of recouping their return on investment by selling their products at those ridiculous prices. Everything Kenyan is cartel controlled.
The problem is the govt here, why buy maize at a price that is unrealistic. It was a decision that is politically driven and therefore not sustainable. They buy maize at a high price and suppliers of farm inputs hike their price also. The other day they would buy dying cattle at a high price and that led to a price hike here and traders opted to import cattle from tz. Then pastrolist (masaai) started to protest that kenya meat market should be protected.
Someone explain to me why we need NCPB. I think this is one function that should have been devolved many years ago.
