[I]Donald Trump[/I][I] suggested firing nuclear weapons into hurricanes to prevent them hitting the US, reports in Washington claim.

The president is said to have raised the idea of bombing hurricanes with senior Homeland Security and national security officials on numerous occasions, dating back as far as 2017.

ā€œI got it. I got it. Why donā€™t we nuke them?ā€ one source told US news website Axios the president had asked during a hurricane briefing at the White House.

The source said the briefer was ā€œknocked back on his heelsā€ as Mr Trump went on to suggest dropping a nuclear bomb in the eye of an off-shore hurricane would disrupt its formation.[/I]

ā€œPeople were astonished,ā€ the source added. ā€œAfter the meeting ended, we thought, ā€˜What the f***? What do we do with this?ā€™ā€

During a hurricane briefing, the[COLOR=rgb(184, 49, 47)] US President asked if it were possible to disrupt hurricanes forming off the coast of Africa by dropping a nuclear bomb in the eye of the storm, Axios news site reported.

According to an anonymous source, the news website said meeting attendees left the briefing thinking, ā€œWhat do we do with this?ā€

Axios did not say when this conversation took place.

It is reportedly not the first time the president made such a suggestion. In 2017, Mr Trump asked a senior official whether the administration should bomb hurricanes to prevent them making landfall.
