The fate of the more than 60 people who own parcels of land at Mosiro, Kajiado county remains unknown after their title deeds were revoked.
The lands commission canceled the titles for parcels traversing 52,452 acres in the area on Tuesday, most of which were either bought or freely issued.
NLC chairman Muhammad Swazuri said the land - within Keekonyokie section - was declared an adjudication section in late 1980s and dished out illegally to non-locals.
He said hundreds of title deeds were issued after the adjudication to various officials in the ministry of lands.
He said the officials, at the time, exploited their positions to issue titles to people who had had no rights to land.
Lands CS Jacob Kaimenyi, Senate Committee on Land chair Lenny Kivuti, chairman parliamentary committee on land Alex Muiru, Senators Stephen ole Ntutu (Narok), Peter Mositet (Kajiado), Kajiado West MP Moses Sakuda and county commissioner, Harsama Kello were present when the order was issued.
He said under section 5 of the Land Adjudication Act (Cap 284 of the Laws of Kenya) on July 16, 1986, the Land Adjudication Committee comprising of 20 local residents was appointed to ascertain the extent of existing rights to land within the section and to record them.
“In 1990, a total of 52,452 acres were adjudicated upon; about 60 parcels of land were demarcated and titles issued to ‘wrong people’,” Swazuri said.
In 1991, the High Court sitting in Nairobi before Justice Dugdale quashed a case that had been filed by a group of people who had been allocated land in Mosiro.
This was after three locals Sapai ole Saigilu, Pose Moipei and Kishanto Kurrinyo contested the allocation.
Sakuda said he was upbeat about the revoking of the titles because the issuance of the same was part of the land injustices visited on the local Maasai.
Mosiro and Ilood Ariak group ranches in Kajiado West sub-county is said to have lost 150,000 acres of land to “outsiders” in the said period.
