Time ripe for the patriotic act....

I had promised to do a listing called demystifying the military seeing as many people are misinformed but decided against it to honour our gallant soldiers and condole with their families. Majority of kenyans have expressed their overwhelming support to our troops but some have grabbed the opportunity to offer their scathing attacks and poke holes and point out to few misgivings largely ignoring the many successes the kdf has had time not withstanding. First of all kdf is a very proffesional military this part of the world from its training to its doctrine. It has steadfastly remained apolitical and greatly played a huge role in stabilising the region. Seeing as we are an african country kindly do not compare us to advanced militaries like the US because they spend close to a third of their huge GDP on security. Peace is very expensive commodity, going through the interwebs this morning i am saddened by the unjustified criticism meted on the kenya military from outright blame to the self entitlement, this is typical of those who unsuccessfully tried to join the kdf, just because you didnt make it does not mean everybody paid their way in! Which then begs the question should military service be made mandatory to every kenyan attaining the age of 18yrs??? Countries like israel have successfully done this.

Maybe not mandatory but it should be more “appealing” as far as perks that come afterwards. Like something which gives you that extra something when employers are looking at your rĂ©sumĂ©. Or maybe employers (both govt and private) should be asked to give preference to anyone who enlisted when they coulda spent their youth doing something else.

greed will never allow humans to choose

We are in som for the long haul. The war on terrorism and extremism is just starting so we need a huge turnover in the kdf that way watu kama mzee mzima can taste combat too
why should the government pay for your university education when you can be drafted you can work and pay for you education upon your discharge

the approach is not limited to authoritarian regimes, Sweden still has compulsory military service for every male over 18 years of age

If i ever find myself on an interviewing panel of ay job in the 254 anybody who served be it nys, police, kdf etc would be hired over someone who did not

I think even before we reach that ‘mandatory’ part, there’s need to ask ourselves, “if terms and conditions for admission into the armed forces were lenient, how many young guys would enlist?” the number lies in the turnout that we always see when there’s a recruitment exercise. Why don’t we start with the ones that are ready and wish they get to be a soldier first, before we move on to the next options

Maybe they can offer to cover costs of whichever course you want in exchange for time spent in combat? Like, 8months to a year for certificate courses, 1.5 to 2 years for diploma courses, 2.5 to 3 years for a degree or masters or PHDs etc OR they could equate years spent in combat versus costly courses like engineering or medicine
y’know? just something to make it worthwhile.

It saddens me when I see people enjoying a peaceful country courtesy of our troops yet they are same people throwing shade on our soldiers.this is how we should treat our soldiers

Which Kenya do you live in? We all know that KDF/Police recruitment are cash cows for the big guys. Probably even the CIC gets a share of the “recruitment fees”.

My own opinion which may not matter anyway is that the uniformed forces ie nys, kanjo, kenya police, administration police, gsu, kenya forestry service, kenya wildlife service, kenya army, kenya navy, kenya airforce etc should not be a career ie lifetime but rather service to the nation say like three years then one moves to other things in life. As for intelligence service anyone who served to be employed

Mandatory NO maybe have KDF reserves.

Kenya isn’t a war monger like the whom since long long time ago have always been at war.

Be absorbed into reserves for one year after serving three

Agreed! No human is emotionally and mentally equipped to see the ravages of war for years on end!

Sorry about the kdf loss jana but how will compulsory military draft help prevent such in the future? Countries without compulsory military draft far outnumber those with. Some things kwangu were possible in the past but currently nuh i don’t think would happen with today’s current generation. Do away with democracy then you might have your way.
