I think that this conflict has surprised the Americans. Countries have learned from past U.S. misadventures: The fall of Saigon in 1975, Black Hawk Down in 1993, Afghanistan etc. Even now, China, Russia, India and other powers are taking notes. When you get involved in many wars, spectators learn your weaknesses and develop strategies to beat you or at least contain you. The same way you will know that a guy has a weak left chin after watching his 10 fights.
Currently, the U.S. has a terrible track record in wars of attrition. The Taliban are back in Afghanistan like they never left. Iraq has reached a flashpoint already. Iran has shown that the U.S. military bases and expensive toys are fair game. In the short term, Iran will lose. In the long run, Americans will lose if they are dumb enough to put boots on the ground like they did in Iraq and Afghanistan.
