Reminds me of the early 2000s when I had been recently employed and out of excitement went to Supreme Furnishers, Barnetts hapo Kimathi Street. Got myself a big LG telly and a SONY 3 CD changer radio on hire purchase. Then I lost my job a few months later. I was called, they called my relatives including my then girlfriend, now wife (I don’t know how they used to get the phone numbers). They even got Ernst & Young to write to me a letter that they would publish my name on all the dailies (this shook me to the nuts but sikukuwa na namna). Long story short, I got a job and paid slowly slowly till I cleared when they were just closing shop in kenya. Good news is those electronics are still operational 15 years later.

The other day I joined Timiza, a Barclays mobile loans application, and got a small loan to drink. It was 12,500. I have already defaulted by a week lakini nitalipa because I am a ramrod-straight dude.
Earlier, I had learnt of this mobile business loans firm which is disbursing unsecured loans to anybody with a clean CRB record and an LPO from a reputable company, parastatal or national government department (NOT county though!). Kama mchezo nikafanya application online and within 48 hours my designated supplier got 100,000 in his Mpesa account (kama uko na LPO na unataka name of company inbox ujionee, especially if you have a name like @Hot Chocolate! .
Tukakunywa WhiteKAPS za 20K halafu after one month I paid the buggers. Interest was just 6%, actually less than the banks (3% application fee, bla bla bla)
Too easy.
Sasa my question is this; will these companies be able to sustain their services in a country where 99.67534% of the people are thieves? Especially when you consider that the only ‘guarantee’ or coercive tool they have is the CRB listing?
I know the firms, which are mostly owned by Silicon Valley venture capitalists, have done their risk assessments, but still, wanajua Wakenya kweli?
Like the thread in the biz section has said, this is a country where a desperate guy will come to you pleading for a job on his knees, yaani ukitaka hata saa hiyo anaweza kukupatia blow job, halafu the following week he starts stealing from you.
Sembuse a 100K unsecured loan?
