In 2008, Ruto was the most hated Kalenjin by the Kikuyus for the role they believed he played in evicting them from the RV.
Then he stepped up to the plate and decided to be a change agent in the RV by unifying Kikuyus and Kalenjins, at least politically.
The enemies of peace thought it was a joke for Kalenjins and Kikuyus to sit together and break bread. It happened and the rest is history.
That the RV has seen peace ever since Ruto joined hands with Uhuru is a remarkable achievement.
A lot of ink has been spent writing the obituary of the peaceful co-existence by the likes of Makau Mutua.
They failed. Some have egged Kalenjins to demand their presidency after five years and not wait for ten because 10 years in politics is like a century.
Raila had Ruto in his corner in 2007 but was fearful of his political ambition. He did what a paranoid leader would readily do-cut him off. In a way, I don’t quite blame Raila. In 2013, Kikuyus were ready for anyone but Raila due to his past open threats to nyumba. Kikuyus were saying: Uhuru is our leader. Whoever he tells us to back, we’ll do so. Nyumba know he has their interest at heart.
