Bagisu and Abagusii (Kisii’s) are different. Imagine mixing them up and ending up in the wrong camp.

It’s the bagisu who are cannibals. Let’s clear up on that one.

The Bagisu, also known as the Bamasaba, are an ethnic group primarily located in eastern Uganda, specifically on the slopes of Mount Elgon. They are closely related to the Bukusu people of Kenya. The Bagisu speak Lugisu, a dialect of Lumasaba, which is very similar to the Bukusu language.

The Bagisu reputation for violence follows them throughout East Africa; in Kenya, for example, they are proverbially thought of as cannibals, and in Uganda itself they are feared for their personal aggressiveness. The imputation of cannibalism attributed to these people comes from the earliest colonial writings on the area including reports and letters of missionaries and government officials. Roscoe, the missionary anthropologist, gives greater credence to this belief by reporting that the Bagisu ate their dead.
