Sleuths drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday, January 30, rescued a female university student who had gone missing for five days.

A statement from DCI on Tuesday, January 31, indicated that the student was kidnapped by three men in Kabarak, Nakuru County and taken to an unknown location where she was held hostage leaving her family in anguish.

Upon investigations, the DCI established that her best friend and her boyfriend were involved in the conspiracy that led to her kidnapping.

The victim, as per the statement, was invited for a late lunch by her best friend’s boyfriend on the day of the kidnapping in what turned out to be a well-orchestrated plan between the group of four.

Oblivious to the danger awaiting her, the lady complied and met her boyfriend at the agreed location.

However, she realized that her best friend was not in the company of her boyfriend.

Upon asking, the boyfriend told her that her best friend would join them later and that he would take a different route to collect a parcel first.

However, their journey took a surprise turn after two men stormed the vehicle they were traveling in to inform the victim that she had been kidnapped.

The trio drove to Ruiru, Kiambu County, at the OJ Restaurant area where they were holding her hostage.

“The trio informed the victim that she had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of Ksh600,000 from Daisy’s family,” the statement read.

Upon receiving the distress call, the victim’s parents reported the matter to the police which prompted action. Investigations by the operatives led them to the discovery of their hideout in Ruiru after having oscillated between four towns within the Nairobi metropolis.

“Detectives who had received a distress call from the victim’s family were closely monitoring their movements as they operated between Thika, Murang’a, Kajiado and Ruiru during the day, in a bid to outwit the officers,” the statement added.

The female best friend would later join them in the rented house in Ruiru where they were nabbed by the operatives.

Further investigations established that the main suspect and the boyfriend of the victim was fugitive suspect over involvement in a series of criminal activities.

“The victim, namely, Daisy Chebet Barno, was rescued being safe and in good health,” the police report said.

On Tuesday, however, DCI in a statement had said that the victim was rescued at an Airbnb apartment in Ruiru, where a female friend of Ms Barno,

Ms Faith Mwende had conspired with her boyfriend and others to kidnap her and demand ransom from her family.

Mr Simon Philip Amayum Akuteka, a Rwandese who has been charged with several cases of stealing motor vehicles in Nairobi and Kisumu, was arrested.

Also arrested was John Mungai Mbau, who also has several cases of stealing motor vehicles pending before court.

Mr Elijah Chege Gitau, a resident of Witeithie, was also among those arrested.

After the arrests, police seized tape, a rope, assorted mobile phones, several sim cards and the identity card of the victim from the said suspects.

Police are pursuing more suspects as well as seeking to recover the victim’s valuables, among them a laptop and mobile phone.

“They drove to Ruiru to OJ Restaurant where they booked a two-bedroom Airbnb and locked Ms Barno in one of the bedrooms. Mwende, who had joined them, took the other bedroom where they made merry with her partner after Ms Barno’s relatives had sent Sh50,000,” DCI had said on Tuesday.

According to DCI, the suspects defied orders to surrender and engaged the officers in a fistfight.
