As a skyscraper comes up in Hurlingham, an apartment collapses in Huruma. Nairobi is expanding at an exponential rate, but poor planning could soon see Nairobi grind to a halt. Poor waste management, water rationing, traffic jam, impassable roads, you get the idea. What if another urban center could position itself in a way that it could become the next Nairobi, a world class city with public transport, no slums, pedestrian and cycling lanes, all that. This city would replace Nairobi as the most preferred location to build malls, office blocks and stuff. What do you think?

There is urban renewal. The more Nairobians are willing to live outside Nairobi due to unattractive homes and unaffordability the more pressure they put on the need to remove slums in Nairobi. At the end of the day money talks. Did you see the way the slums in Kibera got demolished for the road to pass? We will keep seeing these until slums are gone. Money talks

Tunawangoja tu hapa Konza.
No f****g way! Towns around Nairobi will just coalesce to form a super town, just like the Ruhr valley in NRW province(in former West Germany). Nairobi, Machakos, Thika and Kajiado town will coalesce just like Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Essen and Duisberg, with a similar population density if not higher. Akili zinafunguka polepole tu
they already have…just a few more dots to connect the less than 2 kilometre gaps
Nope. Not by a long shot. When they coalesce, huwezi jua mwisho ya tao
Hiyo ndio ya itwa conurbation
Slums will always pop out elsewhere,
Lets not run away from our capital. Even New York City, Paris, London etc. were all shitholes at one point but its people worked on passing the legislature and enforcing laws that changed the landscape.
Nairobi’s mess can only be fixed if people are ready for that change and shift in thinking that mt city should be the cleanest of all.
Exactly. Look at Washington DC. The living standards have been raised to a new high by the influx of educated and monied young people from other places. The black population who were known occupants for the city are slowly being pushed out due to economical reasons that are unfriendly and they can’t keep up with. This will happen in Nairobi too. It’s a good thing for Nairobi and equally bad because inequalities will be worse.
He could barely construct a sentence in English
Possibly. Infact, that is already happening. Mlolongo, Ruaka, Ongata Rongai, all those small satellites have been apsorbed into the greater metropolitan area. However, I think it’ll be a while before those towns to merge.
Thika and Nairobi are pretty close, plus the Superhighway makes traveling between these two towns quite easy. Kajiado and Machakos, however, are further from the city. Nairobi and Thika could merge but I doubt the two others could.
There should be a law regarding construction of houses that fill a plot. It should be illegal. Say “A residential building of more than one unit should not cover more than 50% of the plot” and that buildings should not have ground floor units. juu sasa nyumba zinajengwa ziko na more than 35 units while the main door opens to the street. cars parked on the street. clothes hanging from balconies. its all nonsense.
Unfortunately another city must have the same or better commercial prospects than Nairobi, the last time I saw a place develop under such circumstances, it was so random and without a plan (Ongata Rongai & Kitengela comes to mind), even in a case like Konza City speculators have bought virtually everything around and some have given themselves a head-start by putting up unplanned structures. In a nutshell NCA & NEMA are sleeping on the job, they can enforce standards anywhere in the country including Nairobi if they were serious about it.
I think a true coastal modern city with proper standards should be built somewhere between Malindi and Lamu. I want to see that before I die.
Actually what needs to happen is the restructuring of the other 7 provinces and implementing a sought of quota system where say Nakuru can be made to be a motor vehicle assembly center in all of Kenya…Limuru and other areas with arable land can be slated as agricultural areas…Machakos can be made the country’s administrative hub etc
