Since I was an altar boy during my primary school, I always got confused by this part “and lead us not into temptation”. I wondered how can God lead me into temptations.
Luckily the Pope has allowed for some little editing to replace that phrase with “do not let us fall into temptation.”

The essence of it is God can allow or disallow a temptation to reach you. Remember when David was mad with Abigael husband? .But then the bible says that God only allows temptations that he is sure we can overcome(For those who are born again)

I’m not sure if it’s the grammar that is confusing or the logic.
If it’s the grammar then the word “not” changes direction of the entire sentence.
If it’s the logic part then us Christians believe God leads the way and that’s why we are successful in most of the things we do. He can momentarily choose to seat back and allow the devil to tempt us like he did to his most patient worshipper Job.
But according to Jesus who came up with the Prayer, His version is ‘lead us not in temptation’.
Was is because of what He faced in the wilderness?
Does the concept still apply with us still on earth?
So we have praying all along for Him to save us from His engineered temptations? That’s the part that confuses me alot.

As a layman[SIZE=1] important disclosure[/SIZE] my understanding is this. He leads only to goodness because that is his nature and is merciful. But he can withdraw his blessings/favours and allow the evil one to take charge. We saw him do it to Job. I think he is doing it to us when we see a wallet on the ground.
My thinking is he wants us to be strong that even when faced with temptation we will not tumble and fall.
That English is quite confusing. Shouldnt the correct word be expose not lead?
When you are led into something the chance of deviating is low but when exposed to something the chance of avoiding harm or damage is high because you can make a contrary decision.
