Matthew 26: 27-29. Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks (Catholic transubstantiation happens here), he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant (Greek Orthodox transubstantiation happens here), which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
The doctrine of Transubstantiation as preached by Catholic (and Greek Orthodox) churches is the peculiar belief that during communion the bread and wine becomes the literal body and blood of Jesus.
-
Both Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches admit transubstantiation is NOT taught in the Bible, but is based upon human tradition which has its origin with the apostles themselves.
-
If you carefully read Matthew 26:27-29 above, you will notice that after Jesus “gave thanks” and proclaimed “this is my blood”, he then afterwards called it “fruit of the vine” not blood. This utterly collapses and refutes, with no chance for rebuttal of any kind, the false doctrines of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches.
-
The fact that Orthodox and Catholic both claim their ritual is direct apostolic authority, example and tradition, but they practice two different things, proves transubstantiation is a human false doctrine invented in the 4th century AD.
-However, the most serious reason why Transubstantiation should be rejected is that it is viewed by the Roman Catholic Church as a “re-sacrifice” of Jesus Christ for our sins, or as a “re-offering / re-presentation” of His sacrifice. This is directly in contradiction to what Scripture says, that Jesus died “once for all” and does not need to be sacrificed again (Hebrews 10:10; 1 Peter 3:18).
- Transubstantiation is as much an assault against scripture and the earliest apostolic traditions of the church, as it is an assault on reality and common sense. It is not scriptural neither does it follow apostolic tradition! Transubstantiation is an assault on reality because “if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, smells like a duck and tastes like a duck”, it must be unleavened bread and wine!
