I have just had an experience with middle class living a few minutes ago. I have seen an adapter that usually goes for KES 100 being sold and bought for KES 1000. Yes,1000 bob. Shait ya @Makonika imeevaporate kwa lips as I was picking my jaw from the floor.

Kuria said alot of things yesterday including pointing out that ministries budgets are littered with pointless recurrent expenses
he also said there are projects specifically meant to line peoples pockets and while they as parliamentarians can tell that these projects are just “nyama ya wakubwa” it is not their job to investigate.
He called for a return to zero-based management system, the current system in his opinion encourages unjustified increases.
Lastly, he also pointed out the need for a value-for-money approach in government expenditure, he made the same point earlier in the year on Sidebar. Those who’ve followed government spending know hapa ndio saitan yuko, IFMIS and PPOA have failed to price the stuff GOK buys giving civil servants free rein in deciding how much to pay for stuff, that is how you end up with containers for mobile clinics bought at 7 times their market value or pens bought at 30bob a piece.
On Middle income classification, he is also correct, we are no longer viewed as a poor country, we are now a grown up nation expected to take care of our own fucking bills.
BOTTOMLINE: We are poor managers of the economy, that is why GOK is broke, middle income status only accelerated our sharp decline.

And yet the same govt has daily info on what the prices of all goods everywhere in kenya are sold for. A simple online data stream can be setup in these software systems to verify the basic price for goods/services like they do for shares in the nse, and an exception raised when there’s a variation. A simple Ict issue that is blown out of proportion because of incompetent people in the ministry.
