Monica Okoth went through with her late husband’s final request to have his body cremated, in the event of his death.
However, the intrigues surrounding Okoth’s last respects have refused to go away, with the Luo elders making yet another demand.

“We shall need a written proof that the cremation was done according to Okoth’s wishes. She needs to come here in person and apologise to the people as well,” one of the elders stipulated on NTV.
Monica and her late husband’s mother, Angelina Ajwang’, were engaged in a tussle as to how the late MP would be interred, with the former demanding for cremation as per Okoth’s last wishes.
The elders had on Monday, demanded that Monica present herself to them, for a ritual termed as Tero Chola or cleansing.
In the ritual, Okoth’s widow was expected to make her way to her native home, submit to an HIV and STI test, before being handed over to a ‘cleanser’ appointed by the council to engage in unprotected sex with her.
“If truly Monica is Okoth’s wife, she should honour the community’s culture and practices,” Luo Council of Elders Chairman, Nyandiko Ongadi, asserted.
However, ODM Chairman, John Mbadi, swooped in and saved the perturbed widow, by stating that old rituals, such as wife inheritance and cleansing, would not take place.
Mbadi had held a closed-door meeting with the late Okoth’s family on Monday, with all parties agreeing that the rituals were outdated.
However, going by the latest reports, the council of elders are yet to fully compromise on their traditions, maintaining that Monica needed to present herself in person.

Yaani bado kuna watu wanajiita council of elders…smdh
Mtu hakuwa ukigrow ukifa wanataka kuingilia mambo yakohizi ni vijizee vimezeeka na akili imeoza…
Ati old is wise my foot
The elders are trying to bring down the lady with her sexuality because of thwarting their wishes implicating supremacy. This so backward, naive, corwadice and and a taint on Luo image as Learned elites. These wazee should never get media attention.
Me husema shida ya Africa dawa yake ni kupeleka watoto shule and nature clearing wazee kama hawa. With transition to next age groups, such orangutans will be extinct
What do these useless busybodies do when there are no “customs” to bitch about? Do their rules apply to all Luos or just the “big shots”? Peasant ata ukitaka kuozea city mortuary, kwa raha zako, hio haiwahusu. Wewe pambana na hali yako. Ulikuja duniani peke yako, na umeenda peke yako, wacha kutusumbua aisee.
Ukipata pesa every fucking idiot in the village wants to get involved in your family affairs. Ingekuwa mjaluo peasant ata mwili ingetupwa msitu ikuliwe na fisi hawangejali. You know what the most painful part is? Ken Okoth lived in the streets as a child and none of these “council of elder” assholes ever helped him. Hizi ni vipii zimezeeka. Ukipata pesa tengeneza will and clearly dictate everything even your funeral procedure so that you lock out such opportunists.
Elders like these typically idle the whole day in the village and when something like this comes up, they make themselves busy-bodies.
I wonder if they followed old Luo tradition of coming of age and have each knocked out 6 teeth themselves…
Hii wife inheritance is upus nyingi in the modern era. It may have had a place in the past when people lived their entire lives within a 30km radius of where they were born. But saa hii, it has no place
