I can’t remember if it was Beano or Dennis the Manace, but one of them came with a Rubberband Helicopter that was supposed to fly when you twisted the rubber then released the tension. I don’t know if it was I who wasn’t meant to be a pilot or what, but that thing would just whizz momentarily then plunge downwards. It really broke my heart the first time I tried it, but it taught me about counting chicks before they hatch. My old man worked with the port and we got a fair share of comic books ranging from Superman to even graphic novels like Allan Moore’s Watchmen which I found really boring at the time.
The best however were the strips on newspapers, my old man never allowed us to read “gazeti” on school days. So he would keep them mpaka weekends. On Saturday’s I would wake up early and camp outside my parents door to be the first to get the papers and would wait until I heard the BBC Kiswahili soundtrack
"Ni lugha gani nzuri iliyopasi duniani/
Inayokupa fahari, kutamka ulimini/
Ya kale tangu dahari, tuisifu yake fani/
Ipi kama kiswahili,lugha iso mpinzani/"

And I would start knocking on the door mpaka afungue… sometimes he came out and he looked really annoyed… I don’t know why. I would take hizo gazeti and would lock myself in the store and let the my sibling wapige kelele mpaka wachoke. I would come out after I was through reading to a hail of “Ngoto’s” from my elder bros and sister, but it was worth it. This days I don’t even notice those comic strips anymore I wonder what changed.
Anyway My Favorites were:
Juha Kalulu
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BZF3dpECAAAa3p4.jpg
This guy was alway getting tormented by his clumsy dog Taska who got into trouble and his wife Sara would blame it on him. This guy used to hit his dog… it would be taken as abuse these days and one of those aminal activists would see it as a chance to beg for donor funds. “HELP US FIGHT ANIMAL ABUSE PROPAGATED BY OUR MEDIA”
Sometimes they would make special editions that would be released on Saturday’s that followed Kalulu’s adventures to foreign lands and forests… those were the best.
Flash Gordon
Hii hata sikua naielewa vile lakini I could follow his adventures through alien worlds kwa umbali na there were some hot girls too. Dale Aden…
The Phantom
http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/scale_small/0/229/222184-163535-phantom.jpg
The Ghost that walks or the Man who can not die…and his wolf called Devil. He came from a lineage of the guardians of law called Phantoms. He is just as dark, if not more, as Batman and does not shy away from killing his enemies…
Beetle Bailey

It follows the life of a smart, but lazy army personnel who hates the bureaucracy of the army and is always resisting authority. I loved how he always managed to get himself out o duties and the pranks he played on Sergent Snorkel.
Halafu kuna hizi za Pichadithi

I loved these ones very much. Nilikua nachanga pesa naenda kuzinunu a bookshop zilikua zimeandikwa 5 bob lakini zilikua zinauzwa 30 bob. I had a collection of them at home sijui kama bado ziko… if they are there I am keeping them for my kids. Zilikua tamu sana.
Honorable mentions include:-
Babu
Bongoman
