Tanzanian tycoon gets nod for Kenya cooking gas plant

Kenya has given Tanzanian billionaire Rostam Aziz, the licence to establish a cooking gas plant and storage facilities at the Mombasa port. This move has prevented a potential trade dispute between the two neighbouring countries. Taifa Gas, which is owned by Rostam Aziz, has been granted clearance by the energy regulator to construct a 30,000-tonne liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) handling facility in Kenya. Rostam Aziz, who was ranked the first dollar billionaire in Tanzania by Forbes in 2013, is now expected to compete with Mohamed Jaffer, the Mombasa-based tycoon, for control of the Kenyan cooking gas market. The licence was issued by Epra Director-General Daniel Kiptoo, who confirmed the news. This move is part of a trade deal that was agreed upon by Kenya’s former President.

Mohammed Jaffer had been accused of manipulating prices and killing competition.

Rostam Aziz personally narrated to President William Ruto how Mohammed Jaffer had blocked him from investing in Kenya by frustrating him with govt agencies as he enjoyed the handshake. He was in his inauguration and is one of the Key people that planned President Ruto’s tour to Tanzania to seal the Pipeline deal. Taifa Gas will put the plant in Mombasa
