Tanzania’s Industrial Boom Under President Samia: Geita Gold Refinery Now Processing 440kg of Gold Per Day, Over 700 New Factories Built

By a Proud Tanzanian Contributor

In just four years, Tanzania under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has witnessed a historic industrial transformation — marked by the construction of over 700 new factories and the creation of more than 14,000 new jobs. At the heart of this transformation is the Geita Gold Refinery (GGR), a state-of-the-art facility that now processes up to 440 kilograms of gold per day, solidifying Tanzania’s status as a regional leader in mineral value addition.

Geita Leads the Way: From Gold Mines to Industrial Might

Once known primarily for its gold mines, Geita Region is now an emerging industrial powerhouse. The number of operational factories in Geita has nearly doubled from 824 in 2021 to 1,542 in 2025. In tandem, industrial employment has soared — from just 927 workers in 2021 to over 15,161 in 2025.

The Geita Gold Refinery, launched in 2021, stands out as a flagship project. With the ability to refine nearly half a tonne of gold daily, it plays a vital role in Tanzania’s efforts to retain more value from its natural resources. For a long time, raw gold was exported without processing — but GGR has changed the game.

Explosives, Construction Materials, and Cotton Ginneries

In addition to gold refining, Geita hosts the GGM explosives manufacturing plant, which supports safer and more efficient mining operations. The construction sector has also grown, with new factories producing essential materials like bricks, steel bars, and aggregates, helping fuel Tanzania’s ongoing infrastructure revolution.

Agricultural value addition is also getting attention. The number of cotton ginning factories in Geita has risen from just 2 in 2021 to 5 in 2025, giving cotton farmers a bigger share in the market and boosting local textile potential.

Business Growth and Local Empowerment

The number of licensed businesses has also increased significantly — from 1,346 licenses issued in 2021 to 2,815 by 2025 — reflecting growing confidence in the region’s investment climate. Industrial zones have been designated across all six councils of Geita, with Geita Town Council and Chato District already operational and attracting investors.

A Lesson for Kenya and East Africa?

As a Tanzanian, I share these developments with our Kenyan neighbors not out of pride, but with the hope that we learn from each other. Tanzania’s progress under President Samia shows what’s possible when leadership is stable, policies are pro-business, and local resources are used to create jobs at home.

Imagine what East Africa could achieve if all our nations adopted similar strategies for industrialization, value addition, and economic self-reliance.

Kenya has its own strengths in manufacturing and innovation. Together, through partnership—not rivalry—we can shape Africa’s future from within.

This is very good news. The arabs will come kneeling before Suluhu wauziwe gold.
