Local Tanzanian company MOFAT has been awarded a 12-year contract by the government through DART Agency to operate Phase II of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Dar es Salaam.
The route will cover Gerezani to Mbagala, with 255 gas-powered buses expected to hit the road by August 2025.
Tickets will be sold digitally, and MOFAT will collect revenues before remitting to the government as per the contractual agreement.
MOFAT CEO Mohamed Abdallah Kassim told @AyoTV_:
“The project costs over TZS 170 billion. I took a bank loan to buy buses and invest in systems. I need time to repay the loan and make a return.”
The 12-year timeline ensures business sustainability: 6 years to repay loans 2 years for operational setup 4 years to earn returns
He urged youth to chase tenders and investment opportunities without fear:
“Many assume foreigners are favored—but in truth, most local youth don’t persist when opportunities arise.”
