Tanzania’s Government, through the Ministry of Health, is set to increase the number of operating rooms at the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) in response to the growing number of accident-related heart and bone conditions.
Health Minister Hon. Jenista Mhagama made the announcement on June 9, 2025, during the inauguration of the new MOI Board of Trustees in Dodoma, chaired by Dr. Martina Njelekela.
“We will collaborate to increase the number of operating theatres so surgeries can be performed day and night. These conditions often result from accidents, and timely surgical intervention is critical,” said Minister Mhagama.
She emphasized the need for the Board to:
Ensure service quality
Enhance customer care
Promote medical tourism
Improve staff work environment
Introduce new specialized services
Strengthen international academic cooperation
“The appointment of this new Board aims to strengthen the performance of this vital institution and ensure MOI remains a regional leader in specialized services—particularly in orthopedics, brain, spine, and neurological care.”
Under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, major investments have been made in the health sector, including introducing cutting-edge procedures at MOI never before available in the country.
These include:
- Brain surgery using artificial intelligence
- Minimally invasive spinal surgery
- Sound wave brain surgeries
- Pediatric scoliosis correction
- Arthroscopic knee and shoulder surgery
- Non-invasive vascular brain surgeries
- Hip and knee revision surgeries
- Brain base tumor removals
