Tanzania and Russia Bolster Strategic Ties: Foreign Ministers Mahmoud Kombo and Sergey Lavrov Meet in Cairo

CAIRO, Egypt – On December 19, 2025, Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, held high-level talks with the Russian Federation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Sergey Victorovich Lavrov.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Second Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, also included Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Hon. Palamagamba Kabudi.

A Roadmap for Economic and Strategic Cooperation

The discussions centered on transitioning the historical political relationship between the two nations into a robust economic partnership. Both parties agreed to deepen cooperation across several strategic sectors designed to foster mutual growth and development.

Key areas of focus included:

  • Trade and Investment: Expanding bilateral trade volumes and encouraging Russian investment in Tanzanian industries.
  • Energy and Infrastructure: Collaborative efforts in power generation and the modernization of transport networks.
  • Agriculture and Health: Strengthening food security through agricultural technology and enhancing healthcare systems.
  • Education and Tourism: Increasing academic exchanges and promoting Tanzania as a premier destination for Russian tourists.

Commitment to Implementation

During the session, Ambassador Kombo reaffirmed Tanzania’s readiness to work closely with the Russian government to ensure that the agreed-upon projects move from the planning phase to successful execution.

“Tanzania remains committed to cooperating with the Russian government to facilitate and achieve the implementation of various projects and collaborative matters discussed today,” stated Minister Kombo.

In response, Minister Sergey Lavrov pledged Russia’s full support in providing the necessary resources and cooperation to uphold the long-standing historical bond between the two countries, ensuring it serves their broad mutual interests.
