there’s never maize shortage in Kenya it’s always created artificially for cartels to make money remember all the gorvement maize silos are supposed to be replenished with enough maize stock round the year

Its weird why don’t farmers build there own silos??

Relying on the government too much is not a good thing. Farmers need to form their own saccos where they can buy mobile grain drying machines, Building several 10,000-30,000 Bushell silos at cost for 3 million to 6 million, and their own private mills. This way the middlemen are removed from the picture and the government doesn’t have to bear the brunt of responsibility but its job would only to buy the excess maize which can be stored safely for use in times of emergencies.

Central proVince guys did this na kahawa and yet they wenter very far . Sijui why it’s so so hard

the difference is that coffee is a cash crop so it brings profit to the farmers coz of exporting to European countries…maize is a staple food which means is for diet hence the exploitation it will take time before enough controls are in place to take care of the maize cartels in this country

still waiting to understand your logic here

why should we import maize when the country can produce enough to cater its citizen we can deduce it’s a almost the basic meal in most homesteads we create a shortage so that we can import at low price from large maize producing nations and sell to the gorvement at relatively higher prices hence making a killer profit to the cartels…as for coffee it’s not a basic need hence the control measures where easier to implement

We are all Kenyans with the same mentality, what the politician does, the bureaucrat and the saccos elected officials and employees can do equally good or even better, It’s a rotten society with every man for himself only God is for us all.

It’s a rotten society with every man for himself only God is for us all.

Its a bandit economy…!!

Ulisomea shule gani my friend…You need to sue your agriculture teacher. Maize is a cash crop as well. The opposite of cash crop is not staple food.

create a shortage how?government interventions are a great part of the reason why maize flour is expensive through interventions by ncpb.maize farmers are a small but politically connected constituency. their demands for protectionism, subsidies and high market prices totally distorts the market.

Besides ,maize is a water intensive crop,we just don’t have enough land for maize farming, a sustainable solution would be to diversify away from maize

What you fail to understand here is that there is no surplus at all. The problem is the cosmetic price at the NCPB, everybody wants to sell to the govt.
