By newer most probably you are referring to the SJ or SK generations.
Mechanically, the SJ or SK have different setups from Toyota.
The SJ comes with flat four boxer engines. The competitor in this case, Rav4 doesn’t have a flat four engine. Foresters have a turbopetrol while the Rav4 has naturally aspirated petrols.
Foresters have standard AWD whether base models or high trim levels whereas the Rav4 can be found with a 2WD(FWD) or AWD.
The powertrains in the Forester and Rav4 are not interchangeable. This means the 2 cars are extremely different. The new Foresters are not as hardy or sturdy like the SF or SG because they have grown bigger for more comfort and practicality. If anything, they are even faster than the SFs and SGs save for the SG9 which was meant for the track. Otherwise the SFs and SG5s can’t keep up with an SJG if stock. SFs and SGs had legendary looks and brought the Forester into the limelight but it doesn’t mean that the newer ones failed.
