Why is one viewed as cute & charming wildlife and the other as dirty & disgusting vermin?

Good question. Rats are hated because:

1. They destroy clothes, furniture, electronics and property.
2. They decimate food storages and contaminate whatever is left with their urine and faeces.
3. They carry diseases and other pests like fleas.
4. They attract snakes and feral cats.
5. They reproduce exponentially with just 2 rats capable of building a 1200+ strong rat colony within a year.
6. The mental anguish a rat infestation causes a homestead is insane, you can’t even sleep. People have been known to move out.
7. They result in the extermination of other species such as birds and tortoises.
8. They cause house fires when they chew electric cables and create a fire hazard from nests they build and junk they accumulate.
9. They lower the value of property.
10. They cause the whole place to stink.
