Part 1
The ultra-secretive Selous Scouts was formed in 1973 as a special force unit within the Rhodesian military. It was mandated with hunting and killing freedom fighters. It sourced recruits from volunteers both white and black. As for any special force, the SS very selective and rejections rates typically over 80%. COIN training was very tough as it was configured for asymmetrical warfare in the African bavannah bush and jungle. It comprised but was not limited to basic drills, endurance, bushcraft, parachuting, scuba diving and handling a variety of weapons. Surveillance and infiltration was the main goal of COIN operations. These guys were trained to mimic the insurgents in everyway possible. whites patrolled the bushes with blackened faces and could speak local languages. some SS had to be disguised as women as most guerilla bands had female freedom fighters.
The freedom fighters used guerilla tactics, launching attacks in Rhodesia and running to base camps in neighbouring Mozambique. At the time, Mozambique was led by Samora Machel and he was supportive of southern african freedom fighters. One such was Nyadzoya and apart from fighters, there were also thousands of non-combatants who included women and children. Using intelligence, a SS unit of only 70 heavily armed fighters crossed to Mozambique disguised as a detachment of FRELIMO (mozambique military) infiltrated the camp and moved down in excess of 1000 people. Mugabe on learning of the massacre became enraged and said forgiveness was not possible
This statement indicated the onset of PTSD that was to manifest throughout his 40+ year rule of Zimbabwe. The Selous Scouts was disbanded after independence.
Part 2: The GSU
Our GSU was constituted as a COIN unit of the Kenya Police in 1953 to fight Mau Mau insurgency. With regard to mandate, training and tactics, it has direct ancestory with regard to the Selous Scouts. After independence, why did we let it continue while intact? Was GSU not part of a force that massacred estimated 3000 unarmed degodia prisoners some time in the mid 1980s? There are many other communities living with PTSD because of them. This unit needs to be disbanded so as to be detached from its history, a new demon-less paramilitary could then be set up in its place. It worked for the Kenya Airforce, what we have now is not what we had pre-1982.
