Solution to Turkana Problem

Why is the Kenya Tanzania border relatively secure compared to other borders despite the border cutting through tribes?

1)the border is clearly agreed and signed in a treaty all the way to the ocean.

2)the border is clearly marked. You can see the beacons, one after the other.

3)there is a no man’s land, I’m not sure but around 50-100m into each country it’s open reserved space

Why is the Kenya Uganda border having issues in some places?

  1. the border is not clearly marked in some areas hence Uganda thinks it can grab.

2)no formal arrangements on how to share lake Victoria resources where the border is the edge of an island.

Why is the Kenya south Sudan border an issue?

1)no government has ever made the effort to ascertain the limits of Turkana grazing lands despite advancements in technology to map their movements in search of pasture.

  1. Kenya laxity in accommodating splm deep into Kenyan territory. This has made the illiterate populace of south Sudan think nakodok is in south Sudan . Making it harder to deal with the unagreed areas.

The border between the two countries was not final untill the Turkana grazing lands had been ascertained.

3)why is the Kenya Ethiopia border having issues?

Here the border is well agreed and treaties signed. The problem is Ethiopias many rebel movements and Addis ineffective in controlling regions far away. It can also be said Nairobi doesn’t consider this border a priority or a threat.

4)why is Kenya Somali border having issues?

Somalians determination to undermind inherited colonial borders. So they do things that defy that like building houses or compounds that cut across the borderline… this is not an ancient pattern of settlement considering the anglo Italian treaty estimated very few of them to be inhabiting the jubaland province even before partio ing it into nfd and jubaland somalia.

Also, with no government in Mogadishu, anything goes. An effective government in Mogadishu would surely have been interested in controlling her borders for security and economic reasons.

Another issue is corruption in Kenya. And finally Nairobi carelessness or leaders who do not see far beyond their noses and infiltration by hostile elements (like about the maritime border)

So Kibish police post should be expanded and equiped. We also need to put an airbase there together with a massive barrack, force salva kiir and riek machar append their signatures on a border treaty that the boundary is from Mt naita.

Good one.

Security is usually improved where there’s incentive. What is the incentive to make turkana secure? The armed raiders are just idlers with nothing better to do. They’ve been fighting since before noah build the ark. It’s their way of life

We have some guys called home guard

Snd what happens after when turkana have guns? They’re also going to become a menace

Remember you are dealing with people sans degrees. Most talkers cannot reason logically to save their lives.

You have a point there since arid Turkana doesn’t have strategic economic resources like Nairobi or Kiambu but remember that insecurity anywhere within the republic will paint our country dark in the face of international community. For example, we hear that there’s fighting in DRC but it doesn’t affect the whole country. But the picture we get is that DRC is a war-torn country.

If we’re painted white how will it benefit us? This government has killed four times the number of people that were killed by moi during 1991 and 1997 ptotests. We like to imagine we have a great image abroad but our country’s image is in the mud.

Any international attention we’re getting is already all we will get for the rest of this century. Nothing will change because turkana are fighting or not fighting

Did you know: turkanas started dealing in arms during the Swahili/Abyssinian slave trading days, then later got armed by the italians to help conquer the Abyssinian empire?

They were so lethal that the white settlers made a deal with the Egyptian Sudan condominium that the turkans will be Kenya’s problem, plus the whole of Turkana province while the rest, nyangatom etc will be sudans problem. The British took them but made a mistake of disarming them, they were attacked by their neighbors and that forced the British establish police bases inside the ilemi triangle, it also forced the surveyors of the Kenya south Sudan boundary state the border be adjusted once the limits of the Turkana grazing lands are known.

Hence why Kenya has the right to claim that triangle. I sometimes think it’s part of GoK strategy to let such attacks happen in order to fully take the whole triangle. They will just argue those neighbouring tribe only come armed during periods of prolonged drought

Just reposition existing police forces as you train 30k more police in a mix of KP & APs to position in those areas

Real issue is weak state presence in Northern Kenya. Hii mambo ya give Turkana’s arms or train reservists has already been tried & doesn’t work
