The closing down of iconic Hilton Hotel soon after Intercontinental Hotel is just mind blowing and an indication of a collapsing economy, the government should really be ashamed of themselves, we have never reached this kind of low, ever since independence. Don’t tell me its because of Covid or Russia vs Ukraine war, government wake up from this long slumber.
What percentage of Hilton’s or Intercontintal’s clientelle was locals? Obviously covid and its attendant grinding down of international travel played a pivotal role. Maintaining a hotel the size of Hilton or Intercontinental without clients is not cheap.
Okay, forget about our economy, It is harsh across the globe. Anyway, Kenya is a country led by thieves. Now I hope you can see that the Hilton hotel will soon be auctioned and Ohuru, Raira, Ruto, Murathe, Peter Keneth, and others will be placing their bids on it. It is known as the hunger game. They close it, and come back and buy it.
Hilton are hoteliers. They operate/manage a chain of hotels. They almost certainly do not own the building. That they are leaving does not mean that the hotel or the building will be auctioned. Maybe some furniture or equipment might be sold off, but I don’t see why any of those mentioned would be interested in that stuff.
Sijaelewa the last part of what you wrote. But it could be any number of reasons, including what I think you meant. I’m more inclined to believe keeping the business a going concern was getting too expensive. It must have cost them 100s of million of shillings, if not billions to keep Hilton alive the last 2 and a half years.
You don’t understand business and economics. Businesses that used to do well like Hilton, Webuye pan paper and similar are victims of economic trends and market forces. For AirBnB guys like @Bingwa Scrotum to do well hotels must suffer.
Times are long gone when luxury rooms and delicious foods was only available in a few hotel chains. Unless you are in a place like juba or Mogadishu where they are still building their country from the ravages of war
I don’t think AirBnB and Hilton are sourcing from the same customer pool. Someone that’s booking a room at Hilton was NOT going to book an AirBnB. Hilton has built a reputation for quality and consistency over several decades. Someone in New York that’s looking for the Hilton service is not going to take a risk with an anonymous individual with accomodation in an area they know nothing about.
The budget hotels are the ones facing serious maybe even fatal competition from AirBnB.
The point I was making is that when AirBnBs take an increased market share even on the lower end of the market it causes increased competition at for top hotels since the potential pool of customers reduces.
The only difference is that government and corporate clients will not book AirBnBs. But tourists will. With residents of places like Karen and Runda placing their homes on Airbnb and hotel websites, some of the tourists who normally booked higher end hotels chose them.
