After the fall of the USSR, there was substantial nuclear arsenal in Ukraine that they returned to Russia. A big mistake.

Who walked out of the multiple Nuclear treaties? It’s the USA and not the USSR. Nuclear weapons have no winners and any accident will affect the host country the most. They are not worth it.

The West was opposed to Ukraine’s independence, but Russia went ahead with the idea anyway. Those weapons belonged to Russia, since it was the mother country tasked with ensuring future stability. When your son moves to his own hut, you don’t give them one of your wives.
The problem with the “Ukraine should not have agreed to give up their nuclear weapons” argument is that the Russians had operational control of the nukes on Ukrainian territory and would have needed to relinquish the codes for those things to work. Of course the keys could be changed, but it would take a long time. Plus not all of them were real nukes. Dumb bombs and shells were also part of that stockpile.
Wrong. Union on paper but the driver was Russia. That is why Russia had to decide how and when they would be getting independence. In the lead-up to independence, the US would be discussing with Russia on the modalities to independence for the various states.
ukraine would have gotten too much heat from european countries like germany if it kept the weapons. it would have to hide in russia to keep the weapons. given that ukraine was still considered russian territory, the only way not to be sandwiched between two hostile regions was to demobilize the nuclear installations. At the time situation was dire and the region was suffering from too much poverty to care about nuclear warheads.
If Ukraine gets out of this “alive” their next project will be to arm themselves with nuclear weapons…the other small nations who are watching this unfold are learning a great lesson…you are responsible for your security.
Small nations have no means or authority to arm themselves, of course by small I mean the colonized, colored nations.
