Simba 1 asks health workers to end strike

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked health workers to end their strike and give room to ongoing talks to resolve their grievances.

President Kenyatta, who was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto, announced that a solution will be found on the health workers salary issue but lamented the death of close to 20 patients.

“Let us be human and be mindful of the lives of the patients. I am confident that we will find a solution to the problem,” President Kenyatta told the health workers, saying even when an agreement is reached “those lives will have been lost”.

The President was speaking today at Makindu in Makueni County after he commissioned the Kenya Medical Training Centre (KMTC) Makindu campus and launched medical equipment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital.

The Head of State said governors and the Ministry of Health have been working round the clock for weeks, engaging the unions to resolve the matter and called on the health workers not to allow lives to be lost because of an issue that is being addressed.

President Kenyatta also pointed out that if counties focused more keenly on health and agriculture, a lot more would be achieved.

The President said over Ksh1 trillion has been allocated to counties since 2013.

On infrastructure, President Kenyatta said his administration will continue implementing projects that will attract investors to create jobs for the youth.

He said the national government is keen on partnering with county governments in projects that benefit Kenyans, citing the trauma centre at Makindu Sub-County Hospital as an example of cooperation between the two levels of government.

The President said the Government has invested Ksh 400 million in medical equipment at the Makindu hospital.

He lauded the establishment of the Makindu Medical training Centre, saying training institutions are key in producing staff who will improve the health of Kenyans.

Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana thanked President Kenyatta for launching the medical equipment at Makindu Sub-County Hospital.

The Governor said the state-of-the-art equipment will go a long way in boosting the health facility’s capacity to provide health services to residents of Makueni and people using the Mombasa – Nairobi highway.

Prof. Kibwana appealed to the national government to come up with a marshall plan for provision of water in Ukambani. He proposed increased construction of water dams and water pans to alleviate the water shortage in the region.

Other speakers included Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and area Member of Parliament Patrick Musimba.

The truth is there are no talks. The gov’t has itself sabotaged them since 2013. Hata saa hii mtindo ni ule ule.

Why shift the blame game why all along the government has refused to negotiate with them from 2013. Unlike teachers strike, this one is very unfortunate because lives are lost.By now heads should be rolling to avert more loss of lives. @ Luther what% are you demanding? is it realistic? .But I blame all this hullabaloo on the SRC when it was arm twisted by politicians, just think about the salary of the MCA.

If only medics had the power to disband SRC wangekuwa wamelipwa Sunday. Hivyo ndivyo huyo Serem alitishiwa na MPs but I hear the daughter is also a Dr

Why I support medics, although their demands are rather unrealistic (they will cause an avalanche).

MCA salary and allowances = Sh350,000. Education level? Primary/secondary school dropouts.
Doctor’s salary and allowances = Sh120,000. Education level? Six years in uni PLUS one year internship. On call 24/7.

So, there’s money to pay school dropouts huge salos but none to pay doctors? PULIZZZZZZZZZZZ!

UTAKUFA LINI ?

If only SRC stood it’s ground and the duo supported it we could have averted these crisis of strikes. The ripple effect is yet to hit us. The gap between haves and have not is widening. Tenderpreneur.

The truth is we’ve been treated kwa madharau ile mbaya tangu ile strike ya 2011. The President today was the finance minister then and part of the team that decided to firm a team to address these issues once and for all, thus giving birth to the CBA.

At the point of signing it we were dismissed with so much contempt that literally anybody, even a cleaner in afya house, might as well have signed it. We chose to be reasonable and kept our cool.

Once signed, it is a legal requirement for the CBA to be registered with the Labor Relatikns court but the gov’t once again didn’t. After waiting for over a year in vain we headed to court and won the case, with the court directing that we meet and agree on implementation timelines.

And so in Oct. 2016 we formed our 8-member negotiation team. Spent the next two months practically begging Afya House to meet for negotiations but once again and in typical fashion, they weren’t interested. In the intervening period, we issued a 21-day strike notice that lapsed on 4th. On that very 4th the gov’t hastily called a meeting at 5.30pm which we didn’t attend (as I’ve earlier explained). In yesterday’s meeting, same thing happened: they first kept us waiting for over 3hrs and shortly after kick off, they walked out ostensibly to consult but never came back. With no further communication, we walked out at 5, they called a press conference at 6.30pm.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how we got here.

DOCTORS withdraw talks with government after Labour Court ordered the arrest of KMPDU officials participating in strike.

There were no talks. Just the usual posturing from the gov’t side. They really have no goodwill at all.
