Did you know that there are some apartment blocks and gated estates in Kenya where they do not allow native Kenyans? If you ask around, especially around westlands/parklands etc, you will not be allowed as a tenant if you are black, even if there is a vacancy and you have enough rent. In some areas, even buying a house is not allowed. This is common in areas where the population is predominantly Asian.
Also, people of Somali origin are notorious for not letting out business premises to other natives. For example, if you go to Eastleigh or one of those areas where Somali’s own commercial property, you will not be allowed to rent any if you are not from the same ethnic background. I once went to a Tosha fuel station, whose owners are largely Somali, and I was told that they dont rent out the shops to nywele ngumu.
It is true…Somalis, especially the affluent ones, only rent out property to fellow Somalis. It is however hard for them to practice segregation successfully like the Indians do because they are too many of them.
I asked, and that is what i was told. Talking from experience.
