The controversy over the academic qualifications of Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has taken a new twist after inconsistencies started to emerge on what the legislator has said in the past about the institution he attended for his undergraduate course. Mr Sakaja is vying for governor of Nairobi.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) told Sunday Nation that the senator presented a degree from a Ugandan university for regularisation, which he intended to use for clearance for the race, after a number of documents were leaked.
The University of Nairobi (UoN), where the senator has often claimed he graduated with a degree in actuarial science, told Sunday Nation that the senator is still a student and has not completed the course.

UoN communications director John Orindi said he was admitted to the university on a module two programme in 2003.
“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from first year up to fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” said Mr Orindi.

“The university earlier issued a statement… and was clear that the person in question did not complete his studies.”
The university, in a verification letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dated May 31 last year, said Mr Sakaja’s transcripts were incomplete.
“…they have not been signed by the university,” the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Prof Julius Ogeng’o, replied to the DCI, which is carrying out its own investigation.
Mr Sakaja has in a number of past media interviews said he studied actuarial science at the University of Nairobi from 2002 to 2007.

Why did he choose a tough course instead of going for the easier courses at UON like BA… His competitor Igathe got his BA there and he has been at the top of the corporate world employing Doctors, Professors, Engineers, Pharmacists, Actuarial Scientists and other such nonsense highly rated courses

You know these people from Western and masomos where would he pass talking about Bachelor of Anything

They are simply too haughty and waste themselves pursuing useless titles…

Sakaja is damaged goods now. …

Na hio story ya papers will be the end of his political career… He should have just gone for senate seat again as he gets his degrees in order. Now his credibility is up in smoke. Every university he mentions imekataa his graduation claims.

It means that very few politicians actually went to school. It’s sad, very sad

And he had 5 years to fix that, he just sat and waited. Politicians think the electorate are very foolish

They’re not useless to them. In life every body cannot be the same. People want different things out of life. You are more capitalistic and they’re more socialist. What their community and peers think of them more than money. That’s why they are big on status symbols and degrees that show you went to school. It’s a big deal to them. And it’s good bcz if everyone did BA who would be there to work for watu wa D- who can’t understand complicated concepts. God knows how to balance so diversity is strength and its a good thing.

Your last part is unnecessary…the world still needs STEM graduates…

I agree with you… I accept diversity.

Sure it does. But not meant for everyone. I have never been interested in the social sciences but in my maturity I have learnt that they are more important than the pure sciences…the problem comes when those who are average in science are forced to pursue them simply because of the alue the courses proffer…

Dont bring God into this…blame our shithole country whose systems have collapsed. It’s much easier for the academically challenged to thrive in a failed country like ours…pharmacies are being operated by form four leavers and some hospitals are being run by quacks…we simply don’t employ people on merit. 2 years ago I was in Zimbabwe and the only people who seemed to be doing well were criminals and the academically challenged…those ones who have nothing to lose…Kenya is heading there.

You are making sweeping statements.I don’t think sakaja is an average student…he just got distracted by politics. Back in the day UoN only admitted A students to Actuarial course…I don’t think that has changed.
But I agree with you…had he known that he would pursue politics he would have gone for a degree in social sciences

Alikuwa Module 2/Parallel.

No. I never meant Sakaja. It was a general statement. However, can bet that he never performed well in KCSE… I doubt that he was an above B plain student then… And a 2003 B was mediocre in comparison to a C+ in 1990. As indicated he was a parallel student so he just required a C+ to be admitted…

People who do not finish what they start… He got to 4th year, why drop out?

Understand the context. I mean God makes people different for a reason. Can you imagine if everyone in the world was the same what kind of world it would be?

Sometimes you get discouraged. Sometimes you get a good job. But discouragement are many when you see jobless graduates everywhere.

So is he going to be barred from vying?
Do posts of MPs require degree as well coz sidhani watu kama kina Bahati the cross-dresser,kina jalang’o,simon Mbugua,Sudi wako nazo…
Our IEBC is full of shit

Most probably he got involved with other things and could not concentrate with his studies… And those other things really paid off… Now he wants much much more but the then small matter of the degree is about to mess up with him… Anyway what kind of degree do Akina Ngilu, Sonko, Joho, Samboja and many others have yet they have led their people? Those of us with Postgraduate degrees cannot be elected no matter where we got those papers hata kama ni MIT, Harvard, Oxford…
