Safaricom scandal- The famous Games subscriptions

I thought i was the only one plus few people around my circles , going through the auto subscribe problems until i stumbled across this in meria mata’s news network.

KENYA LEAKS .
Safaricom’s covert corruption syndicate unearthed

Editor’s Note: This open letter to Safaricom has been published as received. No redactions have taken place to avoid legal issues pending a court order in favour of Bob Collymore. He will also confirm receipt of this same complaint.

Dear C.
As per our discussion, below is a story to confirm what I told you.

Some time in September, a friend of mine complained to me that she had loaded her phone with 100 bob of airtime but after two short calls, her airtime was gone. I advised her to dial 100 for prepaid customer care but these guys never pick. Since I’m on post paid, I decided to call 200, which is easily picked because we make for less than 1% of Safaricom customer base. She explained her problem and she was notified that she had subscribed to a games service called “Cheza Games” and that she was being charged for playing games. To which she notified them that to the best of her knowledge, she never made any subscriptions, nor has she ever played any games on her phone. They responded that she may have accidentally subscribed to the games. she had been deducted a whole 72 shillings in one short morning, 72% of airtime stolen! This prompted me to check my account and to my utter shock, I had subscribed to the same service and I had been billed a total of 1500 shillings in four months! When I enquired to know how, they gave me the same explanation of accidental subscription, at which point I demanded for a refund.

To find out whether you have subscribed to some services unknowingly, for prepaid, dial .10054# and for post paid, dial .20054#. Choose option “2” which is “unsubscribe”. If you haven’t subscribed to anything, you will see “no records found”. If you have, there will be a list of them. These services are offered by a category of companies calling themselves Premium Service Providers. Try sharing this with your friends and you will see the extent to which this fraud is being perpetrated. If there are any people who will find that they have subscribed, chances are that they have no clue how they got subscribed in the first place. Only a very small number of people actually know this because Safaricom is not willing to educate her clients on this because it will amount to loss of revenue.

In my quest to find out from Safaricom how they are letting these things happen, they actually admitted that there are some employees who have been colluding with these service providers by subscribing people via the back end without the knowledge of subscribers. Some employees actually own these service providers and many have been sacked having amassed hundreds of millions or even billions among them since these fraudulent activities have been occurring for many years now. I have written to Bob Collymore demanding that this should be put to an end by sensitizing Safaricom customers but to no avail. I shall forward to you my correspondence to him in a separate email. I demanded to get the contacts of the Cheza games and was informed that it is “Huawei Technologies”. I called them to inquire what I was being charged for and they told me that I was subscribed and even thought I don’t play, there is a flat fee of 10 shillings per day. However, in my billing. the first month was ksh.15, then 114, then 357, then 401, then 492. When I asked how come it escalated beyond the ksh.300 that is chargeable per month, given a flat fee of 10 bob per day, the guy couldn’t answer my question. Whenever Safaricom is faced with these complaints, they are quick to refund you because after all, only a few people know this. By refunding you, they pacify you hence buying your silence.

Further, the 100 customer care service never works, therefore, in the event of seeking help, one is discouraged and resigned to fate because no help is forthcoming but they have to continue communicating. As much as
Safaricom tries to pass the buck to their employees, there is no way they can convince anyone that they are not in on it due to the fact that these service providers that are guilty of perpetrating this fraud are still on their platform. Secondly, they have not gone out of their way to educate their clients about how to unsubscribe from unwanted services. The reason Safaricom has looked the other way is fueled by the fact that sensitizing customers and thus leading to cancellation of these subscriptions leads to loss of revenue for them since these providers have a revenue share arrangement with Safaricom.
Furthermore, Huawei Technologies Ltd. is the biggest trading partner of Safaricom because it is Huawei equipment that runs Safaricom. Even the Ksh.30 billion camera deal that for the government was done with Huawei. Is it then a wonder that Safaricom and Huawei are colluding to defraud the Kenyan Mwananchi?

I’ve also tried to have this issue publicized via print media but I’ve hit a brick wall. I spoke to a friend of mine in Nation and told him to investigate the story. To start with, he realized that he was a victim also because he had subscribed to a service that he was not aware of. He gave the assignment to an investigative journalist but the journalist told him that there was no way Nation would print a story painting Safaricom in bad light because Safcom is a very large client of Nation.

Yesterday, I looked at my daughter’s account and realized that she had subscribed to ELEVEN of these services! I would urge you to tell all your family members to check their accounts too.Just to mention, one of the ways they trick you into subscribing is by having some banner somewhere as you are surfing the net, or pop-ups, which you click accidentally click on. Call Huawei Technologies employee whose name is Michael Sindani, mobile number 0723577443. He’s the one I called to enquire about my account and couldn’t answer my questions. We can use my account as a point of reference so that you can understand their activities.

A few individuals in conjunction with Safaricom have connived to steal billions of shillings from the common mwananchi, thus aggravating the already existing poverty levels in our country and we can’t sit back and watch this happening.

Regards,

Githiomi.

Wengine tu ni kutype ferk safcom lakini bado unangangana kutumia services zao. If you are really irked, nunua samsung galaxy pocket ama idiot na uweke line huko iwe ya mpesa pekee, simu nyingine unaweka any othe line you feel like. Sio kutype ferk safcom alafu unafungua message ya “dear customer you bundle balance is below 2mb”

When I found out pia mi nivictim, niliwatumia messages kibao (more or less 100mssgs) za f**k Safcon plus Collimore na nikafanya hiyo line iwe ya Mpesa pekee. By then walikuwa wamenisanya 800 bob.

And you were still paying to insult them.

Nope. Texting customer care doesn’t incur any costs. You should try it sometimes.

Boycotting safcom won’t solve the issue. It needs to be addressed head on. This would have been grounds for a class action suit somewhere in America something that I believe is achievable in Kenya with the right motivation. Lakini nyinyi endeleeni kulalia maskio

As a postpaid customer, i find my bill high than expected since i always promise myself to unsubscribe from this shit but never do.

So i wont blame anyone yet by my own omission i have ratified safaricom conning.

I voted with my feet and decided I can’t keep complaining forever. I use Safaricom mainly for mpesa and receiving calls. I use other options for data and making calls.

The same issue with Well’s Fargo subscribing people to services without their knowledge and bundling them with charges mpaka kesho.

I only use safcom for M-Pesa.

Acha kuongea just for the sake. Ni wangapi especially old people can have that time to change an old line simply because there is a cheaper one? Those by the way are the targets, people who can’t even suspect their money is gone. Now you with your dumb advice can’t see anything wrong because you can have two lines, na tunasema corruption itawai isha hii kenya.

Sikubalianangi na guka akisema kenyans are stupid lakini in your case evidence is in plenty.

Kwani hao wazee wako huko nyumbani hawaonangi credit yao inapotea na kujiuliza maswali? Ama unaassume they’re dumb as door knobs?

Hao old people, hawana grand children ama local know it alls wanaeza uliza kwani kunaendaje? Ama wametengewa eneo lao spesheli ya wazee tupu hakuna nafasi ya kukutana na anyone else?

Juu mtu ni mzee, hawezi kuwa na simu moja na line mbili, moja anaweka chini ya battery anaitumia when it is needed? Ama haujawai ona hiyo?

Corruption haitawai isha Kenya juu ya mafala kama wewe who can’t think outside the box. Wacha kuwekelea wakongwe eti hawaezi shikanisha. Everyone knows any other network is cheaper than safaricon . The moment wanaweka credit na inadisappear, how dumb do you think they are that they won’t notice and switch to a cheaper network na saa iyo labda aliweka bamba mbao na akaongea for a minute?

Knowing that justice is for sale to the highest bidder, how much can you put up to ensure the suit is pushed through to a successful conclusion?

Yes it is the right way to go. You can make a lot of noise about it online or in the media if they don’t choose to black you out to protect their interests but once it has landed in the justice system, how far do you think it will go?

Safaricom doesn’t subscribe people to this crap. Most of you are blaming safaricom for no reason. Most people subscribe to such from browsing shady websites which have such adverts. Once you start practicing better browsing habits mtaacha kulilia sarcoma

There are times when an using my phone, a pop-up shows up telling me “You are about to subscribe to the blah blah blah service for Ksh 30 a day” I just click cancel. This has happened several times. I think there are some jiggas seated somewhere trying to subscribe unsuspecting customers to these SPAM services

Dude, by the time old person ameona credo yake haikai, those are 2-3 good days. Now if this happens to lets say an average of 500k people a day, with a subscription of lets say 20bob, that is 10m a day. Corrupt or clean deal? Now you wise guy is of the point that, this is justifiable just because old folks have youths blah blah blah.

If i am one of the stupid and dumb kenyans, well let me be but we are screwed daily by these corrupt deals by spectators like you who think any complain is petty and concluding that corruption haitawai isha kenya.

Again with degrading the faculties of old folks. If one puts bamba 20, makes a one minute call and the credit disppears, you think they won’t get what’s going on? A one minute call on safcom is 4 shillings. You mean to say they’ll notice 16 shillings has disappeared after two-three days!!!

Please re-read what I wrote and this time make an effort to understand. It’s in plain english. The elder citizen on noticing what is happening will ask anyone around them what is going on. There’s a 90% chance that the person around them is younger than them by more than 10 years. Where in my reply did it imply it’s okay for them to be stolen from?! Read and understand.

You’re behaving as one who has no idea that the justice system in this country is compromised thoroughly. Your complaint will be buried even before the first hearing. Where in my reply did I imply that that is okay?!!!

Where in my reply did I imply that corruption will never be defeated in this country!!!

Stay on topic and keep your feelings to yourself

They are still culpable, they need stronger internal controls to deal with such issues.

Kwanza kitu watu wanafaa kuchunga ni their privacy, it seems these large telcos don’t give a hoot about that.
