There was also a lot of witch hunting and burning. Something imported from England but with a special dose of extremism.
The Salem debacle perfectly depicts the psyche of the American religious fanatic. Guys would throw a person accused of being a witch in the water. If they floated, they were witches, if they drowned, they were innocent. So a witchcraft allegation alone was a death sentence
