Someone I know is going to rehab for 3 months for a drug addiction and Im wondering do rehabs really work? Yes! They will detox you so you dont die of withdrawal symptoms but at the end of the day isnt it just your decision and willpower and relationship with God that removes people from addiction? Anyone I know who went to rehab relapses. Personally I believe in the power of God and self determination more than institutions like rehabs, kwanza some just abuse people like this one of Somalis.
I never went to no shitty rehab, and 16 years after the last satchet of Kenya King, here I am, sober than an owl!
There’s that ancient adage that says, Take a donkey to the water hole and that’s all there’s for you to do. The drinking is the prerogative of the said donkey!
We should never get tired of discussing this topic. Many families are suffering from this demon, alcoholism! Many quality lives are being rendered useless by the same!
What I fail to understand is how other humans mistreat each other. If we all learn to treat each other the same way we expect to be treated, the world would be a better place.
Addiction is a disease that does not discriminate. Kesho, utapata one of your kins ameshikwa. Same as mental illness, anyone can be a victim. We should treat each other humanely instead of resulting in violence to solve issues which causes more harm than good. His vita solves nothing, especially not the sick.
I know this a controversial but I really think you can be an addict and still live a functional life, its only that people never try a range of things to be addicted to and then pick the least disruptive one. Like check out the rewards of a certain drug versus the withdrawals and the general cost benefit then pick the best. The problem with alcohol is that though it has one of absolute highest cost to the body its a social drug, its legal ,its available and its used as a social lubricant , as a reward, as a means of bonding and then its withdrawals are very severe that because of the extreme lows its easy to get addicted to it. Plus it builds tolerance pretty quickly the more you use it.
Humanbeings are not all built to be nurturing, thats why you should pray God you never end up under another persons care - even that of your own kids is when you will know human nature for what it really is. Just look at all institutions be they group/foster homes, hospices, jails, asylums, rehab centers, even day care and boarding schools. The moment another humanbeing has power over a group of people, as in they are dependant on the goodwill of that person it can only go south - look at how househelps abuse and even kill helpless babies. Just take care of yourself so that you never have to be in the care or at the mercy of another.
Alternatives to Alcohol - The trick is get positive effects and minimise the negative - choose your drugs of addiction wisely if you cant do without them altogether, ama why were we learning Bio and Chem? So that they can help us decipher stuff and make informed decisions or even make a living from them like Kanyari na Potassium Permanganate. Right now if you could make synthetic booze with no withdrawals and no harmful effects si you’d be a billionaire?
The main target for alcohol in the brain is the neurotransmitter, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), which keeps the brain calm. So drugs mimicking or stimulating the GABA can act as an alternate to alcohol.
Alcoholics who are trying to quit can take a class of drugs, obviously with prescription from healthcare provider, called benzodiazepines. These drugs are also prescribed for anxiety, panic disorders, insomnia, muscle spasms and some forms of epilepsy (the commonly-prescribed drugs Xanax, Valium and Klonopin are all benzodiazepines).
Like alcohol, these drugs are full GABA receptor agonists, meaning that they enhance the effects of the brain chemical GABA. But taking benzodiazepines can cause significant side effects, including dizziness, weakness and upset stomachs, and people who use these drugs can become dependent on them.
Theoretically, an alcohol alternative could contain a chemical agent that would bind only to the receptors that affect the positive effects of drinking (relaxation, pleasure), but not to the receptors that affect the negative effects (nausea, memory loss). In other words, if you drink it, you’d still get a “buzz” without having some or all of the harmful effects of alcohol on your body. And when the body breaks down this alcohol alternative, it would not produce acetaldehyde, the toxic substance that leads to hangovers, liver diseases and other ill effects of drinking. And, if people drink too much of this alcohol alternative, they could take the benzodiazepine antidote flumazenil. Flumazenil is sometimes also used in hospital emergency rooms to awaken patients who are unconscious for no apparent reason.
Understanding Addiction
Most problems we have in this world including drug issues are political theyre created politically to benefit a few people
Rehabs don’t work, they put you in an ideal unrealistic environment!! The moment s/he walks back to real life, s/he gonna drop real hard!! Hopefully the bill for rehab is on him or her… S/he has the power within him/her to say enough is enough unless ni infant
Rehabs buy you time to re-evaluate your life, that is all they do. If you are not ready to change you just relapse
There is a thin line between understanding and enabling an addict. We are compassionate but also the only way to help an addict is to give tough love.
