I think I don’t have the answer. Premier is just too simple, you always know what you will hear if you see “prod. DJ Premier”. Not surprised he produced Christina Aguilera, he knows the formula of pop music - simple and catchy, and he was smart enough to use it in production of rap beats.
Dre is a pop producer, I can’t even recall a beat by him I liked.
Dilla/Madlib are quite interesting but not when it comes to rap beats. These ones are brilliant though
9th wonder is not from the same league and quite boring.
Large professor is great and underrated due to not having big hits, probably the greatest producer of that era.
Diamond D is just average, can’t even say anything good or bad about him.
Havoc is average and boring with few exceptions.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention RZA who is one of the most unique producers ever in my opinion, sadly at one moment he changed his strategy from quality to quantity. I can’t even explain how much I liked old RZA
And Pete Rock who was compared to Preemo like no one else for some reason that I can’t really understand, since their styles are too different.
Too bad him and Nas beefed and never worked together again.
But my favorite rap album was produced by El-p who is well known today as a part of Run the Jewels, but over 20 years ago he made something that impressed me so much that I probably will never feel it again. This shit was so different from anything I heard before. Some beats sound like they were made by aliens from another planet, like all the rules of beatmaking were broken or ignored.
Premiers beats sound the same. Very little range distinction on high huts. He doesn’t push the limits of drum beats. So he’s music ends up sounding very Underground NewYork like. That is very 90s music. He’s almost like Timbaland, although Timba has a lot more range in beats and mixes in very distinct samples. He likes to juggle samples where premier picks a sample, either reduces speed or plays fast, and loads it onto set beats.
Here’s Premier samples. Pay particular attention to the beats and note the lack of sophistication.
I find beauty in simplicity, flipping beats should not be like organic chemistry. It take time to be master in sampling, diggin in crates listening to wide libraries of old music.
