Putin's Soft Underbelly

Trying too hard to fill the vaccuum left by a weak USA and lazy NATO in the Middle East, Vladimir Putin is stretching Russian reach and creating enemies who know where to hit.

Several months ago, a planeload of Russian tourists leaving Hurghada was blown out of the skies, and now a 21 year old rogue cop kills the Russian ambassador in broad daylight after posing as his bodyguard:

Russia never had colonies, and their only adventures abroad consisted of training, arming and clandestinely propping up percieved Cold-war allies. The only explicit military campaign, Afghanistan, became a quagmire and the seed that would lead to the USSR’s collapse.

Putin may put on a tough face for NT, but he clearly does not understand that the raw power of brutally carpet-bombing targets like Aleppo can be counter-balanced by ruthless opportunistic acts of retribution directed at his exposed soft underbelly.

Putin did what Obama failed to do in Syria… with effective results, without Russia the USA supported terrorists would have made it impossible for Assad to win this war

Before Americans intervened Assad had already massacred a huge number of his citizens… by the time got into Syria there were anti Assad rebels fighting him. when you say Americans made it difficult for him to win the war am left wondering which war … committing mass murder perhaps???

Both sides have committed war crimes, what I was saying is that the terrorists would have defeated Assad if the Russians did not come in to help assad

Huh???

I have no problem admitting that Putin put a stop to Western ‘Arab Spring’ meddling in Syria and gave Assad a new lease in life.

What I am saying is that he was and still is unprepared for the repercussions. That fellow simply bluffed his way into that event with a weapon and stood 4 feet behind his quarry!!

was the Arab spring and the Syrian uprising purely spontaneous?

Hizi ni zile story zimepikwa tu kutoka kwa akili. Afghanistan made USSR collapse? The economic structure failed. Russia is too small economically to fill those boots. China maybe.

Is that something you know for a fact or something that you heard from CNN?

The adventure in Afghanistan was a failure, and it represented the extreme side of the Cold-war, where Russia was wasting resources on an unwinnable arms and influence race. Economic collapse is a logical conclusion to such a strategy

China in the Middle East, playing soldier and playing politics? You are seriously lost.

Beating about the bush?

By shooting Ambassador Andrei Karlov, the assassin was also protesting his own country’s sitting on the sidelines in the face of the ongoing atrocities in Syria. In recent months, Turkey has changed its position and is now cooperating with Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia and Iran.

It could be that the objective of the assassination was to disrupt ties between Russia and Turkey, which have been on the rise ever since their lowest point following the Turkish downing of a Russian combat plane last year.

Sources in Turkey were quick to blame supporters of Fethullah Gulen, the Turkish preacher who is in exile in the United States and who Erdogan has accused of plotting the failed coup over the summer. Since the attempted revolt, Erdogan has cracked down on his opponents and especially Gulen’s supporters, and purged the military and justice systems.

The assassination was caught on camera at the gallery and the security lapses that enabled the murder to occur are immediately clear. Karlov did not have protection, and if he did, the guards were not close to him and their reaction was too slow to prevent the shooting. The fact that the shooter succeeded in bringing a gun into the gallery is another example of possible negligence.

It does not seem that the shooting will derail efforts to stabilize Syria. On Tuesday, talks are scheduled to begin in Moscow among Russia, Iran and Turkey, as well as others, on a possible diplomatic ending to the ongoing war in Syria.

The interests of these three countries are greater than an isolated incident, even the murder of an ambassador.

Erdogan’s interests in Syria are also limited in their scope – he wants to ensure that a Kurdish entity will not be established along his country’s border.

Putin’s interests are different.

As demonstrated by Russia’s disproportionate bombing of civilian targets – including schools, hospitals and orphanages – in Aleppo, Putin is using the same methods that were effective in quelling the Chechnyan insurgency some 10 years ago.

Together with Iran, Putin wants to stabilize Assad and restore his sovereignty over as much of Syria as possible.

This is just the first stage in Russia’s ultimate goal of establishing itself as a superpower in a region that was left in a vacuum by outgoing US President Barack Obama.

Tough talking Putin will have to contend with hostility towards soft targets abroad. This was his Benghazi moment.
