You take over a town but securing it has logistical challenges because you need huge personnel to patrol and do house to house searches, meanwhile some cells are giving surprise guerrilla attacks that cripple you. I think the invasion was meant to be a one day thing. Quick and impressive display of Russian military might. Zelensky is a former actor. A political green horn in way over his head. He was supposed to shit the bed and flee in terror under America’s skirt while the Russians comfortably strolled into Kyiv. That hasn’t happened though. Ukraine’s resistance these past few days, though futile, is embarrassing for a country of Russia’s stature. I also don’t think Putin expected the rest of Europe to support Ukraine so strongly. Every day more sanctions. More countries closing their airspace or sending weapons to Ukraine. Cutting Russia off from SWIFT practically overnight. Even longtime allies like Hungary and Czech republic have distanced themselves. It’s not looking good.
Russia pulling out would look even worse. So the next best thing is to force a quick surrender/negotiation by threatening the opposition with nuclear weapons. I’m interested in what comes out of these talks because I don’t think Putin has changed his mind about what he wants. Let’s see if Zelensky has had enough of poking the bear.
