In Japan, due to economic and historical reasons, for many years, people with modest means could not afford private baths in their homes and had to go to a common bathhouse. The process involves paying a fee and being given a locker key, a small towel and soap. After undressing in the changing room and storing your clothes in the locker, you enter the next room naked. There are low rows of walls with faucets, handheld showers, and low stools. You can squat or sit on one of these stools while rinsing and soaping yourself and then rinsing again. All this while many other women are around you. Some baths have hot and cold pools where you can soak after washing. Finally, you return to rinse again and then dress in the changing room. Men have separate facilities.
