President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga on Monday led the country in mourning Prof Odingo who died on Saturday at Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi. Prof Odingo was the vice-chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) when it was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, jointly with former US Vice President Al Gore. He held the position for 11 years.
Mr Kenyatta mourned the deceased as a Kenyan scientist who helped raise the country’s profile internationally through his contributions to the global action against climate change.

“Many people across the world know Prof Odingo as a highly accomplished climate change scientist and scholar who helped steer United Nations efforts to tackle climate change for over a decade,” he said in a statement.
He pointed out that Prof Odingo’s great work at the IPCC helped the UN agency earn a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, making him Kenya’s second Nobel Laureate after Prof Wangari Maathai.
The President said Prof Odingo’s rich research work will continue to be a reference point for future generations as the world steps up the battle against climate change.
“As a country, we appreciate that the international community recognized the work of the great Kenyan scholar and gave him the platform to share his research work and experience, in the process raising Kenya’s profile globally."

Mr Odinga described Prof Odingo as a brilliant scholar and great teacher who gifted a long line of students with knowledge.
“We lost him just when our country and humanity needed his knowledge the most. We are however grateful for the contribution he made to our shared planet,” said Mr Odinga.

The cause of the 54-year-old’s death was not immediately clear.

Via Twitter, the party led by politician Raila Odinga said: "Sad day for our party. We have just lost a gallant son of the soil, a founder member of the Change Movement, and a three-time Member of Parliament for Gem. He was a defender of the party and never shied away from speaking the truth.
It was a double tragedy for the family as Midiwo’s sister died recently. She will be buried next Saturday, according to their brother, Dr Jalang’o Midiwo. Midiwo’s uncle Peter Odima was buried in Siaya County last Saturday.

Midiwo is the cousin of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The former lawmaker first joined public service in 2002 after winning the general elections to represent the Constituency of Gem at the National Assembly under the NARC ticket. He was then re-elected two times in 2007 and 2013 under ODM ticket. After a hiatus from politics, Midiwo made a political comeback after a crucial role in the Building Bridges Initiative. Midiwo was appointed by Raila to spearhead ODM’s signature drive in the Nyanza region.

The former Gem MP had been in the political cold after he lost his seat in the 2017 General Election which was preceded by a fallout with the ODM leader. The former ODM insider has faced financial trouble with the Kisumu County Government demanding Ksh876,000 as rent for a house owned by the devolved unit. In October 2020, the county government threatened to evict Midiwo alongside other politicians who are said to have rent arrears running into millions of shillings.

Prof. Jacob Midiwo, Jakoyo Madiwo’s elder brother, revealed that the family will not rule out foul play in the former MP’s death and will seek the services of investigators to probe the matter. Speaking to the press at Lee Funeral Home on June 18, Jacob stated that the autopsy revealed that he died of acute kidney failure. The brother received results of the post-mortem done on the deceased former member of parliament on behalf of the family.

“We will know now what to do. Whether to engage somebody to investigate further,” Jacob stated.

He further mentioned that toxicological tests carried out on the deceased will take a maximum of three weeks before they are released.
Jacob added that the family would proceed with burial plans as the specimen required for the test had already been removed from the body.

Initial reports stated that Midiwo had died from a cardiac arrest on Monday, June 14. However, his family doubted the cardiac arrest theory.

Midiwo’s other brother stated that the family urged the police to unravel details regarding the cause of death.

“Midiwo was fit, well and going about his activities. We cannot understand why and how he just fell ill and died,” the professor wondered.

The family is also mourning Florence Aluodo, their sister, who succumbed to Covid-19 three days before.
The tentative burial date has been set for June 26, 2021.

Before Jakoyo died, he warned his cousin and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga against attending burial ceremonies as they would attract large crowds that won’t observe Covid-19 regulations.

She vowed to impart the mentorship skills she inherited from her father and secure his legacy. Mr Kirubi died on June 14.

Mary-Ann’s husband Andrew Musangi acknowledged that the task ahead of his wife was enormous.
Kirubi was eulogized by his business peers as a man who always pursued greater things. They said that Kirubi’s daughter’s assurance that things will run smoothly should serve as a big lesson by other wealthy Kenyans that a smooth transition of their estates is possible.

Ms Musangi described her father as an organized man who had put in place a succession plan and shared it honestly with his family and friends.
Kirubi was described as a patriot who loved peace and supported Small and Medium Enterprises to economically empower the youth.
Transport CS James Macharia revealed that President Uhuru Kenyatta consulted the businessman regularly.
“He is the man the President would not leave behind during his local and international meetings with investors, we in government valued his advice,” Mr Macharia said.

The Transport CS also revealed that Kirubi was instrumental in the voter mobilization project in the 2017 General Election to ensure President Kenyatta secured a second term in office.
Information Technology CS Joe Mucheru said that the business mogul partnered with the government to implement a youth empowerment program dubbed Jaza Trust. The project seeks to help youths generate capital and create jobs.

Members of Parliament in the National Assembly have asked their employer, the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) to have former Gem MP Jakoyo immortalised by having a facility at Parliament Buildings named after him.

The recognition, which would be a first in Kenya’s history, is for the outstanding performance of Midiwo, who died of a heart attack on June 14.

MPs proposed to the PSC to rename one of the committee rooms in the new building to Jakoyo Midiwo Room.

The building will host offices for the Members of Parliament, conference rooms, and a cafeteria.

Garissa MP Aden Duale mooted that PSC should recognize outstanding leaders by naming rooms and facilities after them.

“Let Jakoyo be the first outstanding leader to be named after a facility in this Parliament,
we can take Room Seven, cafeteria, or a floor in the new building and name it after the late Midiwo,” said Garissa Township MP Aden Duale.

The lawmakers also want PSC to extend medical cover to retired MPs so that they can access good healthcare.

He argued that medical insurance will better benefit legislators when they retire as most cannot afford medical cover.

The MPs described him as a fearless, astute debater who had no political boundary while interacting with his colleagues in the House.

Minority Leader John Mbadi remembered Midiwo as a mentor and friend.

He acknowledged the former legislator’s contribution to the party as he was always available for party meetings.

Midiwo was also remembered by Majority Leader Amos Kimunya for always remaining in the house until all matters were discussed.

MPs and prominent outstanding individuals have been remembered by having roads, and public institutions such as schools and hospitals being named after them.

Nairobi Deputy Governor Anne Kananu unveiled the Francis Atwoli Road named after the Central Organization for Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General on May 27.
