J1: President Kiir Swears In New Chief of General Staff #SouthSudan #SSudan

The newly appointed Chief of General Staff of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), General James Ajongo Mawut was officially sworn into office, replacing General Paul Malong Awan this morning. He was appointed through Presidential Decree number 77/2017 read out on SSBC on Tuesday night.

General Ajongo replaces General Paul Malong Awan, a powerful General who served as the Chief of General Staff since 24 April 2014. He was in charge of the Army during the July Crisis at J1 where nearly 300 people were killed and ordered the retreat of the army after the President declared ceasefire on 11 July.

Ateny Wek Ateny, Press Secretary in the Office of the President, addressing the media after the swearing in of the new Army Chief told the press that the replacement of General Malong was a routine change within the Army and it is always the prerogative of the President in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed forces.

“The change was a routine change because the position of the Chief of General Staff is a prerogative of the Commander-in-Chief, it is a position where by the Chief of General Staff is either to spend two years or four years depending on the prerogative of the President,” Ateny said. “President in exercise of his prerogative can allow the Chief of General Staff to even bypass four years benchmark as a maximum time that they can serve and can be shorten depending on how the commander in Chief of the Army sees it.”

General Ajongo was serving as the Deputy Chief of General Staff for Administration and Finance in the SPLA at the rank of Lt. General before being elevated to the current post. The President promoted him to the rank of General on the day of his appointment.

The new Army Chief thanked the President on the confidence bestowed on him and said he would abide by the constitution to protect people and the territorial integrity of the country.

“I know it is a difficult task given the fact that the country is actually in conflict by itself but making good use of our human resource, my colleagues behind me here, I believe that they are right people who fit in the right places and will be able to manage the situation and we will exit from this conflict,” said General Ajongo.

The reshuffle has been received with mixed feelings from members of the public.

hehe. Paul Malong is also @ war with osungu itself.

@Okiya kuja uone kazi Paul Malong anafanya

He didn’t have much of an education just like Kiir.

Mabior Garang de Mabior

if it was not for Gen. Malong Awan, President Salva Kiir would not have become the “successor” of John Garang in 2005. Then in 2 013, Salva Kiir used Gen. Malong to fight his genocidal war, in the name of keeping President Salva Kiir in power. The now former Chief of Staff mibilized hundreds of thousands of innocent youth, predominantly from Mading Aweil, who have been used as cannon fodder by the regime; all for what?
In addition to this, the President used Gen. Paul Malong to abrogate the July, 2016 Peace Agreement; by ordering him ro attack the residence of the legitimate FVP and the SPLA (IO) cantonements. In the end Salva Kiir just dumps him like any other Minister or Governor he has sacked in the past. The difference; however, between Malong and the other toothless people that Salva Kiir has sacked over the yeaes, is that Malong has secrets of all the conspiracies of Salva Kiir.
The real truth behind this is that President Salva Kiir wants to murder Gen. Malong because of these secrets, I strongly believe that he already eliminated Uncle Justin Yaac and Gen. Dominic Dim, who also knew the same secrets that Malong knows. If Malong survives; and I believe he willl, he should expose Salva Kiir for the murderer that he is; and, how he uses others to do his dirty work, going back to 1983.
