Police Encounter

Kuna place hapo Mathare Valley inaitwa Kosovo, its known for changaa brewing, drug peddling and is a serious gangsters’ base. Hapo ndio watu huvuta weed mchana tena hadharani na hakuna makarau. Ukitaka anything, iwe ni electronics, building materials, viatu, bikes, drugs, nenda hapo but uende na mtu anatambulika hapo.
All houses are mabati na iko na vichochoro mingi sana na hizo vichochoro pia zina wenyewe. You just can’t come from nowhere na upitie tu, never!

At least kila wiki there was a corpse of a victim of violent robbery na bado pesa ya security ya Mungiki ilikuwa ni lazima ilipwe per house, upende usipende!

Any other time, its a no go zone. It was also a Mungiki base stretching as far as Mlango Kubwa, hapo nyuma ya St. Theresa’s primary.

Hii base, makarau walikuwa hawakuji, except kujia pesa kwa changaa dens na kuenda zao. Extortion was a normal occurrence here. Unaezapata kuna matanga hapo na hiyo njia moja imeblokiwa na kamba, you buy your way past ama urudi kwenye umetoka. The gun wielding thugs could beat you and rob you again na hakuna kitu utafanya. If one of them is shot dead or dies from whatever circumstances, you’ll pay for the funeral expenses by force.

There was an incident in that Kosovo which triggered a crackdown in 2007 during the Michuki regime which led to mass murder perpetrated by the cops in a very violent backlash with brutal force.
At least it brought back sanity in the slum but the aftermath is still felt.

Apparently, a freshly recruited cop who was straight from Kiganjo was assigned to patrol the area alongside another cop. It was around eight hivi jioni, he was being shown where to collect the changaa levies along the dark alleys of the slum.
Being a new face, he was walking behind the familiar cop coz he didn’t know where they were headed.
As usual cops patrol with the G3 on their shoulders and never bother to scan their surrounding for any lurking danger after all it was a routine.
This dude was attacked from behind by a group of thugs under the cover of darkness, smothered, his gun taken and used to shoot the other cop.
So two cops died and two guns plus uniforms disappeared.
This ambush was well laid out coz the guns were never recovered nor the suspects arrested.

The bodies were moved to the bridge to await collection the following day. That morning nikipitia hapo kuenda job, naona two naked male bodies lakini sikujua ni makarau.
So nikitoka mjei Eastleigh jioni, sikuwa na copy what was going on mtaani. Weee! Curfew from six to six na makarau kama wote.
Hapo nyuma ya Albadr kuna kakiwanja ambapo ukitoka kwa Barbara hueziona coz kuna rocks kiasi so it’s like a valley.
Kufika tu hapo tunapata GSU wamelaza raia chini, karibu kiwanja imejaa. I wanted to turn back and run away but the sound of a cocking gun and the heavy presence of police made me walk meekly into their trap.

There were two groups, moja kuangalia IDs na ingine kukagua mangotha za wanaume ndio uelekezwe kwenye unaenda.
Luckily, I survived the scrutiny.
That night, watu walipgwa mtaani coz they were caught unawares na curfew and what followed was a bloodbath.
Mimi nilihamia Kiang’ombe kwa bro the following day.
Ile kupigwa watu walipigwa, nilikuwa naionea tu kwa TV.

Rudisha hio mguu ya kuku ni hile tax yetu imebuy.

Wakanesa detected .

No cop bodies were moved. Lorry loads of GSU descended Mathare that very night - and not in the morning as u say - and broke into every door and continued the onslaught the whole day…27 males lay dead hours later, including a ninja who was a miwa hawker.

I remember this quite well. That time i was an intern at ICIPE hapo Kasarani. That time Thika road hadnt been build yet so trafic jam ilikuwa noma sana. So that i dont eat into organizational hours i agreed with my supervisor that i be coming late and i work till 9.30 pm. Juu mimi ni boy wa mtaa i had befriended hao mawachi wa hapo. Now on this particular day as i was leaving office on my usual hours i found watchie wa day pamoja na wa night yet it was so late. As usual nikawangitea and asked kwani leo amedicide kupeana night reinforcement. Well aninishow vile FFU walimvinya the previous night and he would rather stay kwa job than die. Many people remember Michuki for the sanity in the matatu industry but I always remember him with the fear in created in this watchie.

Hiyo ni day 2 and I wasn’t there

Hekaya swafi with vivid description

nguthuku!

One time back nkipiga story with an old mechanic nlimu uliza “landi tatu ilienda wapi?” Landi tatu was a town slum with houses on three lines hence the name landi tatu. This place was synonymous with chang’aa and busaa just opposite the Mumias, Kakamega and Kisumu stage in Bungoma town. My old man alicheka akanishow landi tatu was demolished after the land was bought by Winners Chapel in 2005 and its place a church was built. He however told me that the place made his blood shiver despite the incident happening in 1989. He told me that back in 1989 a new policeman had been posted to Bungoma and one day he went to arrest chang’aa drinkers. Kufika landi tatu watu waka kata kushikwa sa ikawa cha lazima and the police were only three. Askari naye being a colonialist akawekelea raiya mafimbo. Raiya kuona they can’t take it anymore retaliated resulting in a bloody fight that ended with the death of one policeman and the remaining two critically injured. The two called for help and by the time the help arrived people had ran away leaving the place deserted. The police took away their dead colleague and vowed to revenge. Mzee tells me that on those days he used to work in Kanduyi which is about 4 kms awayand wasn’t aware of what had happened in town. He says kufika tu stage akasimamishwa na karau and as a law abiding citizen he stopped. On being arrested you were asked for your ID, kama huna unalala kwa matope ukingoja lorry ya police. Mzee told me alitoa yake akijua ata ambiwa aende then askari mmoja akasema “mkubwa hawa wana vitambulisho patia hao zawadi yao waende”. The mkubwa showed up in the form three policeman with horse whips, wacha mvua ya viboko ishuke, walionekaniwa viboko hadi akaona ni kama atauliwa akalala chini ndo waka ambiwa waende. Mzee tells me he was sick from the whips for a whole month and from then he stopped his night life, got a wife, married and started his family.

Dec 2016 I was in Mumias, Shibale visiting in-laws when youth jacked Booker Police station and stole 7 G3 rifles, manze hile vita hio neighborhood iliona ilikuwa World War 3, wasee walipigwa mpaka the guns were recovered

@mayekeke I remember that incident

Nakumbuka poa sana, kosovo watu waliumia.walikuwa wanadai mamungich ndio walishanda hao masanse.

That place behind the Al badr petrol station, is known as Nigeria/South Africa, the market for Chinedu/Akinyi Drug company, the youths losing their lives to drugs are a dime a dozen.

Heri nihame for a month niskie tu hekaya lakini kubaki hapana.

Hata Dandora watu walitandikwa sana in 2009 or thereabouts after a cop was stabbed to death in phase 4.
